A large black dog dubbed a 'hellhound' has been sighted around Cannock Chase. Also known as the "ghost dog of Brereton" the creature has been described as large, black and muscular with glowing eyes.
Stories of ghostly Black dogs, sometimes known as "shucks" are quite common around many parts of England, where they are often regarded as portents of death or bad fortune.
There is a legend of one not too far from where I live, at Silbury hill near the Avebury stone circle. The Black hound is said to appear at certain times of the year at or near an ancient burial mound that dates back to neolithic times.
To encounter the hound, local legend has it, is a sign of impending doom or misfortune.
