The story is different depending on who tells it.
It's been said an employee of a Pittsburgh electrical company was working late one night when lightning struck him, disfiguring him horribly and later killing him.
Others believe the man was walking home when he was hit by lightning, leaving his spirit to stagger into a nearby tunnel for shelter.
Most South Hills area residents have heard the disfigured man stays in the tunnel, taunting motorists and any other late night visitors, distressed by his deforming death...
During Halloween, haunted houses are great for fun frights, but for real thrills, there's nothing better than an urban legend.
A secluded spot just outside Jefferson Hills is home to one of the area's best: Green Man's Tunnel.
Just a few turns off Gill Hall Road on the border of Jefferson Hills and South Park Township, a secluded tunnel has earned a reputation as a local legend.
Built originally as part of the BNO Railroad with service from Baltimore to Ohio, the tunnel is now closed entirely on one side.
While many think the Green Man tunnel is the one-lane, narrow portal used by cars, the real site is up the hill and around the corner.
The tunnel houses large piles of salt, used by South Park public works employees on cold winter nights.
The Green Man first started scaring South Hills residents when a woman from Snowden (South Park's original name) wrote an article about a man with mental health problems who was peeping into people's windows while wearing a green mask.
The tale later evolved into a man living in a shack in the woods who would scare away children when they came near the tunnel.
Today, the biggest problems near Green Man's are dirt bike racers and motorcyclists riding on the private property near the tunnel. "Parkers" also find the site ideal for late summer nights.
"We're down there constantly," said Chief Joseph Ferrelli of South Park police. "It's a pretty desolate area. There are more homes there now than there were, but a 500-foot section of it is still pretty covered."
Ferrelli said in past years, Halloween has been a high point for Green Man pranks.
Year after year, school-aged kids from Thomas Jefferson, Baldwin, Brentwood and other South Hills schools tempt fate with a visit to the site.
Four years ago, a few nights before the haunting holiday, a local teen made a hay-stuffed dummy and painted him green. When a women drove through the tunnel, he tossed it down over the bridge onto her car.
"She wasn't hurt, but it scared the hell out of her," said Ferrelli.
"With Halloween coming, kids will be going up there for that. The old myth story is still going about the Green Man. Over the years it has died off, but every couple of years somebody resurrects it and people start going down there."
Some people believe the Green Man occasionally jumps from his hiding place and touches the cars of passing motorists. The next day their cars die for no reason, jolted by his electric touch.
The car tunnel is also said to be the sight of another tragedy. It's rumored that 60 years ago, a teenage couple drove through the tunnel in a Corvette and were hit head-on by another car. They both died and today, according to legend, any driver who honks three times while passing through will see an image of a Corvette in the rearview mirror.
Whether these stories are merely myth or if there is some truth to the tales, the Green Man continues to haunt residents of the South Hills not just on Halloween but year round.

& there is no need to post the same topic twice. : )
