DH and I will be moving at the end of winter to Cleveland, and I'm just digging for information. He'll be working downtown, and we're torn on whether to shoot for an apartment nearby, and avoid a commute, or live in one of the surrounding neighborhoods or towns, and have a yard. I've never really lived in a city environment like that, so it's intriguing to me, and I really believe that I can make an apartment work for us. However, I know it will be quieter outside of downtown, and it's much easier to decorate and garden when you have a yard.

We have an infant daughter, but schools aren't an issue, as we'll be moving before she's old enough to start(we're military). I won't be working, at least right away, so the commute is only DH's thing.

I'd love any personal opinions on specific areas, things to do, etc. We've been told so many conflicting things, but it's either been third(or more)-hand, or 5+ years since they've lived there.

Thanks for anything you can give me!

    Just a bump, and a few revisions/questions.

As interested as I was to live downtown, DH and I have decided against it. It's probably not the best idea for our daughter, we really want a yard, and it's just too expensive for what we'd like to have.

    Now, for the questions:

Most people I've been in contact with live on the west side, and say to avoid the east side and anything with the word "Heights" in the name. Snow and safety seem to be the reasons, primarily snow. We aren't worried about snow, we're from MI, and plan to retire in the U.P.

DH would like to have no more than a 30 minute commute to downtown, what would you suggest to be our outer limit for house hunting?

We plan to rent, as we already have a small collection of houses. What is the rental scene like there?

Any help would be much appreciated, as the movers are coming in a month! (We plan to be there mid-March.)

I cannot tell you anything, other then my family lives in Arkon-Canton Ohio area and SNOW IS AWFUL thing there, wrecks are pretty dang common there, that it hardly fazes anyone in that area, while me and my family are like..."OKAY THEY OKAY? SHOULD WE PULL OVER AND HELP THEM?" when we come up and visit in the winter time.
I can only tell you of SNOW and I know nothing else about the Cleveland area other then my Aunt saying, she wouldnt live there.

My son lives and works in the Cleveland area. I'll try to get some info from him. He just moved to a nice area on the west side. There are definitely areas to avoid but I'll see what info he can provide. It might take a couple days so bear with me.

Thanks! I'm so not a big city person, and this will be the largest one I've lived in. We did live in the Bay Area for a few years, but we were still an hour north of San Francisco. The actual town we lived in wasn't nearly that large. Anyway, I just feel a little overwhelmed and out of my element with this move.
