We've been haunting for about 6 years now and I've decided it would be neat to have our own website showing off our props, giving tutorials, etc. However, I am clueless about how to do this, and I'm afraid to just choose something that comes up in search results. I understand the basics about needing a domain name, getting a host, and getting access to templates to design the site. What I REALLY need advice on is what companies can be trusted, what to avoid, common pitfalls, etc. If there's any place that has website services specifically for haunters, I'd be very interested!

I made my home haunter site from Piczo. I kinda quit working on it.
I herd GoDaddy.com is pretty good and reputable. Also myspace and facebook.halloween is a super cool holiday.

I belong to 000Webhost.com, and I recommend it to anyone who wants a free web host. It's the best free host I have come across, and I've been a member of about six or seven of them in the past. However, their affiliate program is known for never paying out, so don't sign up for that. Everything else is fine, no ads on the sites unless you put them there, and rather good uptime and customer service for a free host.
If you want a professional host, there are a lot to choose from and I suggest looking into them more deeply to find one you like. Just make sure to search for reviews about the service and see what their customers have to say before obligating yourself to pay for anything. You could also go with free hosting like the one above until you "trust" them, and then upgrade to their paid services.
The website in my signature is hosted at the one I mentioned above.

I use godaddy both at work, and for my own halloween site. It's not free, but well worth the service. They are very well known and have great customer service. I would only suggest godaddy if you are serious about setting up a site and maintaining it. Otherwise, find something free. You can check out my site by clicking the link in my signature.

I have my website on yola.com They are good. I use to have it on webs.com, but recently moved to Yola because I have more creativity and control on how my page looks (banner-mart.com)
This is Halloween, everybody make a scene
Trick of treat till the neighbors gonna die of fright
It's our town, everybody scream in this town of Halloween

I have been using HostMonster and DomainCheapsters.com for over 2 years and have had great success. BuyCostumes.com has an excellent affiliate program as well. You will need a commission Junction account for their affiliate program.

I use Host Gator for my server hosting and GoDaddy for my domain name but I'm probably going to have Host Gator handle all of it both because GoDaddy's CEO just shot his company in the foot by going out and shooting an elephant (warning, link to video of shooting on the site) but more to just keep it all with one company and have one less place with automatic credit card billing data I have to remember to update. Host Gator is tailored more towards people who do their own website design though, not so much for those who need templates.
