I went to the animal shelter to adopt a new cat last week. I noticed there seemed to be a lot of black ones. Then we visited with an adorable tiny black cat & the girl helping us said she's been there 2 months just because she's black!?! She even had a black cat tattoo on her neck so people will ask about it & she can tell then that black cats are leats likely to be adopted because they are "evil" or "unlucky."
I couldn't believe that. So we ended up adopting a black cat. I have a rule that all pets must have Disney names so we named him Jack. I thought of Jack Skellington but my husband thinks it's because of Jack Sparrow so he calls him Captain Jack.
I thought the Halloween forum would be a great place to share this as I'm sure none of you would be affraid of a black catNext time you're looking for a new pet, keep that in mind.

I'm a dog person myself only cause I'm allergic to cats. But, there are way too many animals - cats and dogs in shelters. Poor black kitties! That was very sweet of you!
Is it Halloween yet?

When I hear of "black cat", I always think of the fireworks brand?!
We picked up a dog from the pound a couple of months ago. There are alot of little creatures that could use a home out there. Everybody should get there pets from a humane shelter.

Wow - I never knew that! I've always had black cats, but I'm not superstitious. If I ever have to go to the pound to get one, I'll take your advice. Up until now, all my cats have been strays or given to me.

People. They never cease to depress me.
Black cats are gorgeous and a pleasure to live with. The next time my husband will consider another feline without homicidal tendencies (namely in my direction
), we will give one a good home.

A cause near and dear to my heart... I donate to our local no-kill shelter, and have adopted two black cats from them. Best kitties EVER. Helps also that I wear mostly dark clothes, so NO OBVIOUS CAT HAIR!!

I was told that they did not allow any black cats to be adopted during the month of October due to possible killings/torture of said animals just because of their coat color.
There are some sick, sick people out there.

I've had a black cat through out most of my life....I'm on my 3rd black cat now but me and the wife decided no more cats after the 2 we have are gone....I swear if our black cat was a human being, I'd have to get a restraining order against her...She's laying beside my feet here at the computer now....If I leave the room, she follows...When I get home from work, she's at the door waiting for her turn to say "hello" (The 2 dogs dominate her in that area
)...When I sleep sometimes I wake up and she's setting beside my head just staring at me (that part kind of worries me sometimes)....I think in many ways, pets are way better than human beings....ZR

You've got that exactly right, Zombie. I wouldn't trade the three who live with us now for the entire general population of Georgia...or the southeast, for that matter.
We lost our black cat, Jim, last October after 14 years of wonderful companionship with him. It is still very painful, and we think of him often.

I gave my husband a black cat for Valentine's Day last year. One of the local animal rescue groups was doing a "black tie" affair with the animals... only displaying black and white animals. We picked him up a day early, which happend to be Friday the 13th, so we named him Jason.
Even when I was little my grandmother used to insist we keep all the cats inside around Halloween, just in case. She didn't restrict it to just the black one, though.
