Europe was invaded yesterday by a cloud of volcanic ash causing most of the airports in northern europe to shut down...including Amsterdam. Its still shut down this morning.

Volcanic ash causes travel chaos for second day - CNN.com

And as if causing chaos in the air isn't enough, experts are also saying that the residue ash could linger in the upper atmosphere for a couple of years causing climate changes! Less UV light being able to come thru, lower temperatures and acid rain could be the result. Blah! We've already just had one of the coldest winters on record. So much for record high temps this summer

Well its not really a health threat, unless you live in iceland where the volcano is erupting OR you work in one of those airports where passengers have been stranded for DAYS now

There are around 1500 stranded passengers at schipol who were there for a connecting flight. They can't even get to their baggage

Only plus point was the rush hour traffic on friday. Without all the schipol traffic, there was no traffic jam.

I've got two of those exact same cots and they are comfortable! But really is this eruption more than when Saint Helens blew? I don't recall so much concern when she went but I was in highschool and not following the news as much as girls back then.

I took this of St. Helens flying over Washington a few years ago.

    Great pic!

Apparently there have been a few incidents where planes have flown through ash clouds and the engines have gone out. Not to mention the total blackout that the pilots encounter.
One incident was back in 1989 after a KLM plane had complete engine failure after flying through an ash cloud from Mount Redoubt in Alaska. Its the one most talked about here since its the dutch airline. Apparently the ash contains tiny particles of rock and glass that can cause engines to fail and the electrical system to short out. After several attempts the pilots were able to start up the engines again and land successfully.

The volcano is still very active and the volcanic ash just keeps coming and coming. The US president even canceled his flight to Poland for the funeral of the polish president because of the ash. BUT they sent up a test plane this evening from Amsterdam airport to access the conditions. Perhaps that's a good sign for all those stranded travelers.

Haha funny that you mention angry gods.
The people of Iceland are apparently very superstitious. They have been extremely angry lately at the UK and Dutch governments and believe that their anger has caused the eruption. The UK and Dutch governments are insisting that they pay back losses from an iceland bank that went bankrupt during the crisis. The people of iceland held a referendum about the payback and have refused to pay.

So, I'm thinking that if we offer the minister of finance from both govt's that the gods should be appeased and planes can fly

Wow! Those are some awesome photos! Especially the one with the lightning!

I was just reading on cnn that Iceland self is finally have problems with the ash and is having to close 2 airports for the first time. I think its all the europeans and brits collectively blowing the wind back in their direction
