They're really promoting this film. From what I've seen it looks somewhat like a video game. Anybody fired up to go see it?

I wouldn't say fired up, but since I have a 15 day break at Christmas, and couldn't possible stay in the house the whole time, it's pegged as a movie to go see at that time.
My oldest is really anxious to see it. I'm kinda on the fence.

Well, I was until I read some reviews that it was preachy. Nothing I hate more than going to an 'entertaining' movie and then be lectured at for 3 hours. UGH!

I bought tickets on-line yesterday for the 6:30 PM showing in 3-D IMAX. Apparently some places are having special mid-night screenings tonight.

Well, just got back. Visually, awesome. As far as storyline, a joke. Preachy? Well we ARE totally abusing the environment. This film carries it to extremes. But what I didn't like - it plays "dpwn" to the audience. In the climatic battle scene at the end of the film they actually turned it into a Western, complete with "horses", bows and arrows. The primitive weapons cannot match up with the Humans' advanced technology, but, in the end, all creatures great and small band together to overthrow the evil invaders from Earth. We saw it on the giant IMAX screen in 3D. The crowd applauded the film and there was a massive line-up outside for the show after ours. But my 10-year-old daughter found the 3-D to be too much, and left half-way through to watch (sigh) "New Moon", which she saw last month, for Heaven's sake!
A worthwhile experience, but don't expect too much. Another "Titanic"? Fuhgedaboudit.Wolfman

Lurks and I went and saw this last night and I thought it was great. I avoided much of the hype, reviews and protests over this movie because I wanted to enjoy it without trying to find what these other people were talking about.
Even though it was mostly CGI animation, it didn't look or feel like a video game. The story was fun, not an expertly written, win tons of awards while changing the lives of audiences, but it was great for a sci fi action movie.
I can see where it can be over analyzed into being a preachy movie. Yeah there were moments where you can point out a message for being kinder to the environment or not trying to destroy a culture you don't know or understand, but it isn't the main focus of the movie. It's not some politically motivated film meant to change what people think, its a sci fi movie.
Like I said, I liked the film and I didn't bother to read any sort of hype or other crap about it so that I could make up my own mind as to whether I enjoyed it or not....somewhere in the north-woods darkness, a creature walks upright.
And the best advice you may ever get is never to go out…at night.

Good to hear it's not over the top in preachy-ness. I really wanted to like the movie so I'm looking forward to seeing it.
I'm just gun shy because there's been a few movies in the past that I feel like I'm being lectured at with a baseball bat. I can't tell you how much I hate that. If I want a lecture, I'll go to a class, LOL!

One aspect of the film really jumped out at me; the central character, the guy who controls an "Avatar", is in a wheelchair. I remember reading a short story about an invalid soldier who could control a "man-beast" on the surface of Jupiter using his mind and some kind of machine. The story was titled "Call Me Joe", and I'm sure that James Cameron stole that idea outright.

Went and saw this on Friday night, really enjoyed the movie....that's what is was a great sco-fi flick with outstanding imagery and animation. Decent stroy line, not an award winner but worth the hype, not preachy at all and I'm taking the rest of the family to see it (we saw it as a guys night out with movie, followed by dinner and beers.
