I look at my collection of horror games I have collected over the years and I just restarted replaying Fatal Frame 1 on the PS2. I never had the chance to play it much, so, I am going for it and try to play it bit by bit and finish it. I must point out I don't have a ps3 or Xbox yet, so, I can't really know about new games like Left for dead and other new ones.
My list is :
#1 - Clock Tower 1 for the PS1. Multiple endinds, **** your pants moments and the excellent story that would make an excellent movie.
#2 - Fatal Frames series (have all 3), scary and cool ghosts. Great atmosphere.
#3 - Resident Evil 4 for the PS2, great action and cool zombies in Spain.
(worth mentionning, the Silent hill series and Echo nights on the ps1, very great ghost story..)
tell me yours!

Fatal Frame 2 was the creepiest for me. Having to look through the viewfinder of that camera and wait for some demon to jump into the frame........oh yeah!!!
I'll also agree with you on RE4. The first time I encountered Chainsaw attempting to crank up his weapon of choice, with the bag over his head, it made the hair stand up, for sure.

Never played it, not a "Gamer", but I've heard that "Doom" is really frightening. How a Video Game could actually scare someone is beyond me, however. I guess, when you're really "into it", you could easily be spooked but characters jumping into the screen?

Wolfman; like you, I'm not much of a gamer - I haven't been heavy into any of them. I do like some, however, and I'd like to point out that sounds have more impact than the "jump out and scare" portion of the games.
A couple of my fav's were Quake, and Quake II - II more than the first, quite honestly.
The folks at id software did a great job with the ambient sounds, the underlying soundtrack (done by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails), which is spooky as hell, and finally, the sounds of the creatures done in fantastic stereo.
I'd wear headsets playing, and when you'd hear those critters around a corner...or off somewhere behind or above you, the neck hair would just bristle, waiting for that "thing" to jump out at you.
The effect was nowhere near as intense when I'd use the regular speakers - these games are made to take advantage of stereo sound...front to back, side to side.
This has also helped me realize just how much impact sound has in a haunt too - setting that feeling, having people anticipate, without real evidence...just the sounds, the speculation, the imagination filling in the horrible gaps.Hell is an eternity of getting up at 4am to nothing but decaf coffee...
2009 photos and 2008 photos ...uhmmm...and what I have evolving...
