hey Everybody Lets make world smoke free!!
The hardest part about quitting is breaking the habits that go along with it. For example, if you are used to smoking with your friends when you are hanging out together, it will be hard to hang around with them and not smoke. The best way to keep from smoking is to not put yourself in situations with people who smoke and to stay away from places where you are used to smoking.
Avoid places and situations where you normally smoke.
Spend a few days or a week away from your friends who smoke.
Go to non-smoking places with your friends, like the mall or the movies.
Don't drink alcohol. Alcohol will likely lower your willpower and increase your chances of having a cigarette.
If your family smokes, ask them to not smoke in your room.
Exercise. It will take your mind off smoking, make you feel better, and keep you healthy.
Plan activities during the first couple of weeks to take your mind off smoking. It will be easier to quit if you keep yourself busy.
Buy lots of carrots, celery, and other healthy foods so you can munch instead of smoke.

I'll tell you what finally worked for me.

I had been "quitting" for a while...stop a few days, smoke for a month, stop a week, smoke for a month, etc...

I was on one of my "quits" - hadn't smoked for about 2 weeks (just long enough, I believe, to get the majority of the toxins out of my system - an important step, as I'll illustrate), and went out with some friends.

I did not have any alcohol that night, but others were drinking and smoking, and the urge took hold - I bummed a smoke. Then another. Another...by the time I had smoked about half a pack, someone said "just go get your own pack!", which I did.
I proceeded to smoke that entire pack as well.

This was all within about 3 1/2 hours...I was literally lighting one cigarette off the previous much of the time.

By the late evening, I was beginning to feel ill - I went home, and was sick as a dog for 3 days.
I basically poisoned myself on the chemicals in cigarettes.
I don't think I would have had this reaction if I hadn't spent the previous 2 weeks without cigarettes - like I said, I think my body had purged most of the regularly present toxins, so when I inhaled them all again in large quantities, it really poisoned me.

I had found a way to rid myself of the desire to smoke, without even meaning to. Lucky accident.

For about 5 years after that, the smell of cigarettes, or a dirty ashtray, or the smell of cig's on someone's clothes would make my stomach turn - it was awful. Needless to say, I had zero desire to smoke.

This was about 12-13 years ago, and now I merely dislike the smell of cigarettes.
I will occasionally enjoy a cigar (like once or twice a year at the most), and most of the time, they'll give me the equivalent of a hangover: the next day, I feel "bleah", have a nagging headache, and my mouth and throat feel and taste like the bottom of an ashtray.

So, inadvertent as this was, it is one way to quit smoking.
Detox, then smoke until you can't take it any longer.
I don't think it's for everyone - but if you do decide to go to this extreme, make sure you take a couple weeks to detox before poisoning the hell out of yourself.
(and keep in mind - you WILL be poisoning yourself - if you're not in okay health to begin with, this might not be a good idea)
Hell is an eternity of getting up at 4am to nothing but decaf coffee...

2009 photos and 2008 photos ...uhmmm...and what I have evolving...

    Hey Joe..
I've heard of that method of quitting before.
Basically locking yourself away for a couple days or so and literally smoking yourself unconscious. I'm not sure your GP would recommend it, but I've heard it works.

I've never seriously tried quitting. I smoke cigars, and when I think of the money I've spent on tobacco over the years it makes my eyes water worse than any cigar smoke.

Problem is I really enjoy a smoke.

There is a gal I know who quit a little over a year ago after 40 years! She has a little applet on her I-phone that keeps a daily running tally of how much she has saved by not buying cigarettes anymore. Since she quit, she has been keeping the tally running. It was over $3,600 just since a little over a year. She said the app alone does not keep her from smoking, but it sure helps with her motivation, especially she said whe it hit the $2000 mark.

My grandfather did it old school and what he did was wear a rubberband around his wrist. Everytime he had the desire he popped his wrist and conditioned himself to associate the pain with smoking and kicked it that way.

    Those nicotine patches are good.

Don't put 'em on your arm though...

Put 'em over your eyes so you can't find your smokes...

You don't want to try hubby's method, either. He was in a serious truck accident 11 years ago and was in a coma for 3 1/2 weeks. When he woke up, he was no longer a smoker! He said he's never had the desire since and can't stand the smell of it. Unfortunately, though, his brother got him hooked on dipping a few years ago. He's trying to quit that now, but is having a hard time.

    You are Hilarious!!!
I smoked for 25 years, then decided to quit (after coughing up blood). To get through the withdrawals, I slept for 3 days; only getting up to do necessary things, i.e, eat, etc. Worked great, didn't smoke again for 10 years. Started back up almost 5 years ago; Jan 1, 2005 . It was a New Year's resolution. Most people make resolutions to quit smoking; I made a resolution to start smoking. Only resolution I ever went through with. Maybe next year's resolution will be to start drinking. LOL
Seriously, it was the dumbest resolution I ever made. Wish I had never started back.

Been smoking for 40 years... quit once for 2 years... have to quit now...have COPD and can't seem to do it. The pull of the nicotine is strong. I quit drinking over 15 years ago and don't miss it at all. This is the hardest thing I have ever tried to do.
