Swine flu has been around in the UK for the best part of the year.
Yes, a few deaths have been attributed to it, but in all cases there have been further underlying health problems. People die of flu every year...it just doesn't generally get reported.
On the whole, it's been used by most people to "throw a sickie" and cadge an extra 2 weeks off work, since they are telling people that if you are exhibiting the symptoms as meeps has described, you should not visit your GP for fear of spreading it.
Basically, it's a lot of media hype, and is generally no worse or dangerous than any other flu virus that kicks around every year.

I let my daughter sleep until 1 on Friday. Hubby was a little upset until I told him that I think that
is the biggest helper as far fighting off illness. Sleep is your body's way of healing itself and
building up an immunity. She up by 630 am for school 5 days a week, 1 day getting up at 1 isn't going to hurt anything. I look at like you'll wake up when your body is done. Nothing wrong with that. On a sad note her last soccer game was canceled because out of 18 girls 12 are "sick". Can you tell I'm not buying it? Last game of the season, about 40 or little more out today (as our high) and it was an away game.(field is about 25 minutes away). I hate when a fear is injected in to the public by the government. People just believe whatever they are told and run with it. No one questions anything and no one thinks for themselves. I still say no to the shot and will continue to do so."Be the kind of woman that when your feet hit the floor each morning the devil says,"Oh Crap, She's up!"

This thread has been oddly comforting. It's nice to see real people voicing their opinions on the subject. Here in Texas it is the top story daily. People dying etc. Last night I saw a piece stating that they don't exactly know for sure if the number of deaths is off the charts because they've never kept record of flu related deaths (which I thought was odd?)
I've been torn on thesubject because it is easy to get swept up in the media hysteria and I'm germ paranoid by nature. BUT my better judgment is calling bologna on most of it, or how its being presented anyway. "Swine Flu claims another victim, GET YOUR SHOT! No shots available until late October. Shots now available but only for those ages 2-24 "
*screams*
I'm personally not comfortable with giving my kid a vaccination that has not been thoroughly tested, nor with a vaccination I can't have myself. Heaven forbid she had any terrible reactions to it while I stand here unvaccinated. Hell no."Where ya going, baby? You going to get the corpses?"
"Yes, Moe...I'm going to get the corpses..."

Just do what you feel is best for your daughter. I cannot in good conscience allow my daughter to get a vaccination that I myself would not get. I'm a bit a paranoia person too (I had a son that died a few years ago from a really rare disease) so I go above and beyond as far as my daughters health and well being (in a paranoid overprotective kind of way). This vaccination makes me nervous. Your body has to learn how to cope with these diseases and illnesses. She also not getting Gardasil. From what I've read the potential side effects are horrible. I know it's not normal to have such extreme side effects but there is always that chance plus I do not see it as being necessary. I've also read that if you do get HPV scientists now believe that your body is capable of clearing it up itself. So yet another un-needed vaccination. You just do what you can live with. Don't let anyone else try and sway you or change your opinion. They are our kids and we need to put them first and do what we as parents think is right for our children.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has been questioning the need for the H1N1 flu shot or any flu shot in particular. I've been kind of struggling with the idea of getting my 2 sons (5 and 1) the H1N1 shot. I work for a hospital and of course they are pushing these shots like there is no tomorrow. I did end up getting the regular flu shot just because my employer offered it and it was free. I just got over a "flu-like" illness (no idea if its the flu or not), but my husband and my boys have been fine and none of them got a flu shot. I cringe every time they add yet another shot to the list of childhood vaccinations, so I'm just never sure what I should do.

whatever I got...I think it's STILL kicking my butt... It could be post surgery crap too....I just feel so fatigued and weak. Apparently I have anemia from blood loss but that's nothing to do with the flu. I really don't think the vaccinations were all the hype about them, it seemed like the same set up every year. I didn't get one and I seriously don't think it would've prevented me from getting whatever funk I did manage to catch. Just use your best judgement on the situation, but I think everyone is doing just that anyway. Just once again, if you start feeling sick, deffinately go to the dr. Don't worry about "Oh it might be just a cold" it might or it may be something huge. Don't chance it. Maybe if they caught it sooner with me I would've blew it out of my system instead of spending a thousand dollars on pills treatments and surgery.

It's Halloween, ghosts around, lock your doors, don't be alone
