Extremely Cool Gesture by the coach.
As a member of a Track Club years ago, I was involved in helping out at a meet that our club hosted that featured "Special Olympics". Seeing, up close, the effort that these people have made to deal with their situations is very moving. In the Disabled Shot Put, for instance, most of the male competitors had Harley Davidson tattoos, skull & crossbones do-rags, typical "Bikers". Bikers in wheelchairs. The first guy that threw tumbled out of his chair on the follow through. Like a doofus, I rushed in to help him climb back in. He shook me off, and scampered in like nobody's business. The Wheelchair 400 M Sprint was also compelling. Going full-tilt, those things are hard to control. And the flat out effort of the Mentally Handicapped in the 200 M was something else. That's a killer race. But what I'll NEVER forget was the 100 M for Blind Runners. They ran one at a time, in Lane 4. The announcer asked before the first runner went for the specatators to remain silent until the runner crossed the finish line. This was because they were guided by officials at the midway point and the finish line. As the gun went, the officials, using megaphones directed the runners like this; "four, four, four, four, five, five, five, four, four, four four, three, three, four, four" and so on as the runner wavered back and forth, out of their lane. The crowd was eerily quiet. I saw grown men, dabbing at their eyes and women crying. Then, as the runner crossed the finish line, massive applause.
Thanks for bringing that memory back with this video!
