I know..it's still the 3rd...I'm taking a baking break right now. We are having 20 or so guests over for a small BBQ (most of which I decided to get catered so my mom and I weren't stuck at the grill all day). Going to attempt to make coleslaw...can you believe it? I have never made it before..I hope it's not too difficult. We used to do fireworks (I know..it's illegal in NY)...but this year we decided not to tempt fate and are just going with glow sticks and that sort of thing for the kids who are coming. The weather is calling for intermittent thunderstorms, so I'm thinking this will probably be a mostly indoor-cook out. What's everyone else doing? I'm always exhausted by the prep work...the pool, the garden..cleaning franticly, not to mention cooking, but in the end it's worth it.

Sounds like fun! You'll have no problem with the slaw =)

Here, we'll probably visit some friends, and end up at the county fair. Going to introduce the daughter to fireworks, too -- her first time seeing a pro display.

I am staying home because the fireworks will scare my animals, and I need to make sure they're safe and not freaked out.

Two rabbits, two rats and one hamster = I'd rather be here and make sure they're okay than leave and end up worrying about them.

And besides. One of my bunnies is sick with GI stasis... the last thing I need is for her to be stressed right now.

I just chilled out and worked on the pond with my lil guy, didnt go no where and had no company....just enjoyed the day with my kids.
I fell asleep and missed the fireworks, but at least the kids and wife sat out front and got to enjoy the fireworks over the lake.
Now to go review the tape of the late night egging.

We celebrate July FIRST in Canada, so the FOURTH is usually our chance to host our American relatives and friends when they spend their day off with us.
The neighbours have been setting off fireworks nearly nightly since our other long weekend...May 24th...Queen victorias' birthday...and last night was no exception...we had a tea on the door step as it got dark...the weather has been cool here for a week or two...spicy chicken breast and chips on the side.
Best comment of the night: some small child wanted to know if Col Sanders and Uncle Sam were brothers, or what???

I braved the heat and was out in the garage building a mausoleum for my FCG. Man! It's hot out there.

Hope everyone's 4th was wonderful. Coleslaw is not my forte...but other than that the day was great.

Nightbeasties: I think it's great you are a responsible pet owner and realize how fireworks can truly scare animals. Our local shelter just reported they had picked up two very large stray dogs on the morning of the 4th. They kenneled them up for the night and the next morning came in one was dead from apparently beating itself against the wallls of the kennel trying to escape from sounds of the nearby fireworks, the other was traumatized and also injured, but he should be ok. Turns out these dogs did have owners (I use the term loosely) and said that their dogs were always roaming the neighborhood (Hi....ever hear of keeping the dog in the house or paying a few $$ for a fence?!!) and yes they were terrified of fireworks and other loud noises. Irrisponsible pet owners p*ss me off.

Yeah, every year you see signs everywhere the day after... "lost pets"- people who put their amusement before their responsibilities really irk me too.
