Apartment complex won't let recruit out of lease

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A St. Petersburg resident heading off to boot camp next week can't get out of his apartment lease.

Michael Agosta lives at Camden Lakes. He would have to pay major penalties to get out clean.

Sergeant first class James Butler works with recruits out of his St. Petersburg office all the time.

According to the federal law, he says, apartment managers are required to release soldiers from leases like this if the soldiers are called to active duty.

"I've never before seen an issue with a rental agreement or lease agreement be a problem," Butler said. "Once somebody joins the army they're supposed to give the apartment complex or whoever they have the contract with 30 days."

Agosta admits it he gave them 17 days but he said the apartment manager would not even discuss the details.

"She says I can't even put in the 30 days notice because I don't have official orders," Agosta said.

Agosta showed them a military contract. He wont get official orders until he gets to boot camp next week. Until then Camden Lakes is fining the recruit for breaking his lease.

    Agosta's father can't believe it's all happening.

"They see what a lot of these people's children are going through in the military and they should all be treated with honor," Agosta. "What he's doing is something honorable."

Bay News 9 called Camden Lakes to get a comment but did not get a call back.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From another forum I'm on, there's a "Camden Lakes Telethon" sparking up

Thought this was a pretty despicable story. So.... IF you feel so inclined to back a soldier, feel free to give Camden a call... IF you happen to find the number....

If anyone really wants to do SOMETHING while doing little, take a moment and let them know how you feel.... maybe with a fax?

Free Fax • Free Internet Faxing

That'd be 2 FREE faxes over the internet a day.

What should you send? Good question...

The site may be a little slow because of all the usage it's getting today......

Disgusting things like this will happen more and more often if America elects a Democrat into the Oval Office.

Sorry, I try not to throw out my personal beliefs and opinions, but it simply could not be helped...

This is disgusting and I believe it could very well be federal law. I remember seeing it in a couple leases out here. If someone gets called to duty they have to go. Whether or not this place is interfering with federal law I think a decent lawyer can mop the floor with them.

The apartment manager will be taken to task, it has publicity now and he will not get away this. Landlords are not the biggest problem, but he is a symptom of the greed and disrespect that has been bred in this country through the last six or seven years. I live in a military town. I see it and it's gotten worse and worse these past few years, when it should be getting better, it is shameful.

All the shoddy treatment of the military, from BAD housing to bad pay to not giving our soldiers what they need, to the VA situation, whoever is in office yet will hopefully do things differently than have been done the last many years... my ex is a disabled Air Force vet and we talk about this stuff all the time, and see the stories, talk to his fellow vets, and deal with a VA health system that seems to disrespect vets more than anyone. We certainly don't feel the same as Rookie, but this is America and there is room for all opinions.

However, I'll leave this thread to those who wish to get political over it. I hate politics... especially the current party system which is divisive and tends to set people at odds instead of to finding common ground.

Just to give an update. My fellow comrads at another forum have absolutely bombarded that place with faxes and several people have picked up the phone and gave them the what-for!

Some of the transcripts are pretty funny. Basically, people calling them up and asking, "Why do you hate America?" with a lot of "click" following, but some pretty good back-and-forth.

Many of us have also sent this story (multiple times) to Bill O' Reilly. I don't watch the show, but it can't/won't be good for this place if they make it there!

Nightbeasties>>>I agree with you all the way! I'm married to a disabled Vietnam Vet who recently just got an operation at 58 yrs old from a back injury that happened in Vietnam in 1969.

They drove over a mine field on a track & everyone got blown off & when the gunners shield came down out of the air it landed on his back. He worked 18 yrs. of his life standing as a operating room technician in surgery till the VA finally retired him a few yrs. ago because the back injury was causing him to drag his leg while standing so many hrs. in surgery.

The guy went his whole life suffering from what happened to his back in Vietnam & Now!! after all this time they finally decided to operate, it was such a delicate operation that they had a specialist come across the street from Duke Univer. to do his operation at the VA. Prior to this he spent months doped up on morphine for the pain because the surgery schedule was so far behind.

The day of his operation they called me in right after they brought him out of surgery.....the pain meds they gave him did nothing cause he had been on such high doses of morphine for so long. I never saw someone suffer like that after a surgery in a hospital where they give you pain meds. but they just don't work. They told me that they had to have written permission from the hospital admin. to give him higher doses of morphine cause he was getting the highest dose they were allowed to give. You should have seen him while all this was going on ...waiting to get the permission & such......Jesus I thought he was gonna die. His operation was just this last October 4th.

I worked with Vietnam Vets for 3 yrs. in assisting in the filing of claims & also a bit of off record counseling. I met Vets that no matter how we tried to prove that their illness was from service connected problems they could get no help. The system works until they get orders from headqtrs.>>>>>>put no more claims thru. for this month or year. We already have Iraqi Vets going thru the PTSD programs. Its a mess. Some Va hospitals do ok but some are nightmares.

Sometimes I wonder if Americans really knew what Vets go through after being in a combat zone or any military position & then ya come home to find the promises that were made to you are not kept. What a secret it all is.....but it is commonly talked about amongst Veterans. We sit back & say.....after each war>>>>I hope we learned something from this. Fact is we learned nothing or the people we vote into office don't pay attention. We know the repercussions that a war has on soldiers and now we just continue to send them back to the field ....over & over again. I worked with suicide situations, did some counseling with Vets who had friends that committed suicide.

You think about how we bring up our kids explaining things in life as they have to be addressed. Try helping a 19 yr. old to understand that it was not his fault that his buddy, who had a young wife & 2 little girls shot himself. Try to explain that it was not his fault that he did not see it coming in his friend, try to help him thru that funeral & to also be strong for his buddies wife & 2 kids. We have some rough issues ahead of us my friends....we better pray this country gets in the hands of someone that can do the job because right now its not getting done!
