Everyone has given such good responses so I don't have much more to add really. I understand though Laurie, I have days like yours also. Sending you a big hug of support!

Rookie - Excellent comments about compassion. I couldn't agree more.

Violence I have no answer for. I think the biggest issue may be increased coverage of violence, not an increase in it per se. If the news just covered news, and not sensational accounts of husbands murdering spouses, mothers drowning babies, etc... we'd never hear about it. If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around... you know the rest.

I have often wondered what the heck is going on with people.
Selfishness, greed, not caring about anyone but themselves, using others to get what they want.
Then I see people who do care for others and find that they are the majority and not the minority.
    It makes my heart sing.

Newspapers and news casts center on bad things, for some reason thats what sells.
I think hearing about bad things happening to others makes some people feel better about their own lives.
Several years ago I remember a news paper printing just positive news, but they soon went out of business.

I can't help but feel bad for all of those people who have suffered in the earthquakes, floods, and storms.
My heart goes out to them.
There is nothing I can do about the misery in the world, except to help my fellow human beings and be the best person I can be and treat everyone like I would like to be treated.
Sometimes this is extremely hard to do, but if I don't try to help make this a better world, then I am just like those people who don't care, and that is unacceptable to me.

Laurie, I feel your pain. I was struggling with depression when the World Trade Center was attacked. Watching too much news made the depression worse. Sometimes I just have to take a break from the news for a while, or choose the time of day I read the paper or watch the news on TV. Starting or ending your day with heavy duty, bad news has a greater impact on you than you think about.

You are a sensitive caring person. That's why we love you!!! Give yourself a little break from the news...the world can go on without you for a few days.

Just have to say again how lucky I am to be in you guys' company...you've no idea how often reading your posts puts situations into better perspective, and other times makes things so much easier.

Definitely think giving the news a break for couple days is in order.

I worry a lot, too. I've been wondering lately what is happening with this world. What is it turning into. I have wished that I could just go back in time, even 50 years ago. That was until I just finished reading a great book called Hope and Honor by Sid Shachnow. He was 7 years old when he was sent to a concentration camp in Lithuania during WWII. He and his family escaped and survived and came to America. The things he talked about in that book made me realize that there have ALWAYS been serious problems in this world. EVERY generation goes through turmoil. Nowadays things are just more sophisticated and modern.

digsbugsgirl, I agree, mankind has been cruel through out the ages, look at history some timethe middle ages, even our own history, with native americans, slavery, etc. I do think the media coverage plays on our fears, and on sensaitionalizing things.
Laurie, just by your compassion and caring, you have made the world a better place. If it didn't bother you, then you would be part of the problem. Compassion and loving counteract the horrible things, and make it bearable. Keep praying, and caring! I believe if we are kind to one person, then maybe they will be kind to one person, and then it can spread!

I tend to agree with wilbret that the earth cleanses itself. We are coming up on the end of a 7 year cycle as far as the calendar goes. Just like the 7 year cycle for humans the earth also goes through many changes as it comes to the end of the cycle.

50 Years ago you had the Cuban missile crisis.
    Before that, World Wars.
    Before that, Civil War.
    Before that... and so on.

School shootings are not new. How about this one...

The real world can be a lot scarier than the beasties that we celebrate on Halloween.
