About 4:40 this morning, we had a rather uncommon earthquake here in central Illinois...5.4 on the scale..
My wife was freaking out thinking someone was trying to get into the house, I said "Nope, thats an earthquake" She thought I was pulling her leg...of course, she couldn't get back to sleep so she was calling everyone in the family waking them up.
Only my 3rd earthquake I've ever been in. First one was in 1984...small one, shook the dinner table. Second one was pretty big, but I was in Marine Corps boot camp when that happened.
Pretty cool way to wake up.

Although common here on the left coast, a 5.4 is serious enough to do some damage. You may want to check your homes' foundation and chimney for cracks or separation.
Now ponder this, was it the actual quake, an aftershock, or a prequake to a much bigger one?I don't want to just scare them... I want to mess them up for life!

Well...here it is, 10:30 and we had a little aftershock...or as spookineer has suggested...maybe we're getting ready for the big one...
We'll have to have someone come and check, but I don't think the epicenter was close enough to do any real damage, but better safe than sorryWhy rule the living when you can control the dead.

O.K yes I do look for dates that mean something or relate to other things, but I find it really weird that the "Big" Earthquake in California took place on April 18th 1906.

Yes, that was the big one so far. Every year there is a party in SF on the anniversary (today) but the number of living survivors is few. I do recall experiencing the 1989 Loma Preita quake, it was a little scary.

Even after being stationed in California for most of my 11 years in the Navy, the only earthquake I have ever felt was in Decatur, Illinois, around 1968. Funny.

I was born and raised in Western Kentucky, and they always talked about the New Madrid fault - and that when it starts up, it's going to be a doozy.

It woke my wife up this morning, but I didn't feel a thing. She was freaking out and we live in Chicago. Funny thing is on morning talk radio people were calling in saying that they were going to call their insurance agents to add earthquake damage insurance... yes, earthquake insurance... here in Chicago. People are ridiculous. Everyone has to overreact to every little thing. I mean, for most people it was just a little shaking. No injuries and little damage was reported.
