Can anyone suggest a good digital camera? I'm in the market for one (no more than $300) that is super EASY to use for someone with no technical skill. I basically just want to be able to take a pic, put the card in the computer and have it appear. Anyone have any ideas? which have you loved/hated?

I have the perfect one for you. I bought this for my 85 year old Grandmother before her long awaited month trip to Italy and France. She is NOT a technical person of any kind, but she found the camera was very easy to use and was very pleased with the quality of the pictures. If you want to take a lot of pictures, I would recommend getting an extra memory card. I bought a 2G card. It holds upwards of 700 pictures.

Canon SD1000 is a great camera. We had the SD600 and my sis in law has the 1000.

We now have the Sony equivalent DSC-W70 (I think?) We got the 4GB card for it. The only real advantage I can say the Sony has is that the Carl Zeiss lens is better than what you get in the point and shoot Canons... but the difference is negligible for regular joes.

I'd suggest shopping online for a camera. You need to decide on a camera first, then go to some of the shopping forums like www.xpbargains.com or www.fatwallet.com. You should end up saving at least 30% over Best Buy.

I got the Canon SD850 IS for my husband for Christmas. It is awesome - 8 mega pixel, image stabilization, 4x optical zoom! It has auto white balance which is really helpful. Also, it takes really good video considering that video on a still camera is an afterthought. I paid $320 for it at Best Buy towards the end of December so it may be cheaper now.

The reason I will always buy and recommend Canon is that a few years back my husband and I spent $500 or so on the Canon PowerShot S1IS. About 2 years after having this camera, it started taking black pictures, we didn't know what was wrong. We called Canon support and had us mail it back to them for a recall on a certain part.

A few weeks later, Canon called us saying that it was going to be longer than expected for the part to come in so they would rather upgrade us to the new model (PowerShot S3IS) for free, and exchange any memory cards we had for the new versions.. also for free.

I have been in Customer Service for a long time. It wasn't something that Canon had to do, but they did it.. my husband and I were thrilled and it was just an overall great experience. The camera is amazing too!

I posted a thread on another forum regarding a very good digital camera. The SD1000 is a great micro-camera, but I've been absolutely thrilled with my Cannon A570 IS. The A570 IS is a little larger, but has image stabilization, 4x zoom vs 3x zoom, AA batteries rather than a specialized camera battery (which isn't that big a deal unless your batteries die on vacation or something), as well as some additional manual functionality clinched it for me. The camera has great auto functions, but the manual functionality is there if you ever want to experiment. The SD1000 fits great in a shirt pocket while, again the A570 IS is a little bit larger.

I found this thread on the comparison of the two cameras. I really don't think you can go wrong with either one, but I've recently seen the A570 IS for as low as $149 at Ritz Camera. Check their online store.

Not to knock Olympus, but I had an older model (3 yrs old) that gets absolutely blown out of the water by this new Canon. I understand the technology has changed a lot in 3 years, but the difference is unbelievable. Check out the following two pictures. The first is with my old Olympus in 2006, and the second is with my new Canon in 2007. Both pictures were taken without flash using a tripod.

Also, Olympus and Fuji cameras require the xD card versus the SD card. xD cards in my experience were approximately double in price, if not more.

Just some things to keep in mind while you research.
