Since there are many pet lovers here, I was wondering if anyone has adopted a 'rescue' pet? We are hoping to adopt a little Corgi from the Lakeshore Pembroke Welsh Corgi Rescue and were wondering if anyone has heard of it, or had any contact with them, or what your experience was with other rescues.

We are in love with a little girl named Bella and hope everything works out (we meet her next weekend) so that we can adopt her, but Mr. We'en mentioned the whole Ellen thing (where she rehomed a dog she'd adopted and the dog got taken back by the rescue) and so now I'm kinda leery.

Just curious what your experiences have been with adopting, esp. from a rescue. Thanks!

I haven't adopted any of our pets from a specific rescue, but 3 out of the 4 we have now came from our local humane society. My mom used to work for them and our family is a big supporter of the work they do.
My parents have had 3 Corgis and love them tp pieces. The first two were Pembrokes and the newest little guy is tri-colored one. They are all very sweet but also very protective of their home. I think getting a pet from a rescue or shelter is the way to go. Make sure you understand all their rules so that you dont have a situation like the one Ellen found herself in and if you have any questions be sure to ask the people at the resuce.
I hope everything works out for your family and Bella! Be sure to post pictures of her!!

Both of my kids have gotten pets from different rescue programs, andhave had no problem, as ghostship13 said, make sure of the rules, the problem Ellen had, I believe was of not following rules, . It is wonderful that you are using one of those wonderful organizations. My pets haven't actually come from a organization but all were strays that we made ours. Good luck with Bella, , and i agree, post pics!!

We don't have a rescue here, only a humane society. We got our dog 'Brindle' after she was picked up as a loose animal.... she was taken to a local vet.. where they keep them until they are claimed by the owner or put down. A small part of my job is to post the pictures of all the animals picked up in a book so the public can come and see them... then claim the animal if they see theirs.... I saw a picture of Brindle and KNEW I had to have her !!!
Her owner came in a claimed her after a couple days. I told them that I they decided they didn't want her to call me. They seemed pretty upset that they had to pay all the fees to get her back ! The next day they called me, we went to see her and took her home that day !
One of the BEST thing I have ever done in my life. We love her soooo much !
    Lynn

If I build it, will they come ?

I tried to get another Boxer from a Boxer rescue here in Idaho but couldn't get a response. We have two humane societies so I kept watching the websites for Boxers. One day, there was a white female boxer/mix and they were having a drawing for her and her two puppies that day. I went down there and met her and she was so sweet. Two other people came for the drawing, but they wanted the puppies, no one else came for her so I got her. She reminds us alot of our dear departed female Boxer named Tug, so we named her Deja Vu. But we call her VuDu for short. It makes us feel good to know that we could give her a "Forever Home".

Thanks for all the great responses guys!

Hey Ghostship13 they sound so cute!
My parents have had 3 Corgis and love them to pieces. The first two were Pembrokes and the newest little guy is tri-colored one. They are all very sweet but also very protective of their home.
This is what I've heard too. Do they shed a lot? They have the cutest faces - we're dying to meet Bella in person and snuggle that cute muzzle!

Thanks bethene! Yeah, I guess when you sign a contract, you better know what's in it.

Those are great stories Lynn and Skulkin! Sounds like it worked out great for both of you and your sweet pups.

Good info to know all around guys, thanks!

I don't think they shed any more or less than any other dog, at least my mom has never complained about it or anything. My folks have a beagle too, its hillarioius pulling up to the house, you would swear they have 20 dogs with all the racket. But once the corgi's get to know you they are big babies, follow you around and hop in your lap as soon as you sit down.

Thought I'd slip back here and let you know how our visit went. Sadly, Ms. Bella is the unfortunate victim of severe neglect and lack of socialization. This poor little thing would barely look at us, and we had to pick her up to carry her anywhere, especially outside. Once out she got startled by something and promptly tryed to escape. (We have a fenced in back yard so she didn't get out.) We tried cuddling her and giving her treats, but the pained look in her eyes told us she was just not happy here. She stayed for 3 hours, and not once during that time did she voluntarily look around or move from the spot on the floor where her foster mom had sat. With much sadness we had to admit she wasn't a good fit, and her foster mom agreed. She said that they have many more Corgis coming into the rescue, so maybe one of those would work out. We're going to stay in touch and keep looking. So hopefully someday we'll have a sweet pooch to play with and love!

It does take a long time for an abused animal to come around to new people. I wouldn't give up on Bella.

I did adopt a cat from a rescue situation. They wouldn't tell me much about what happened to her. One thing I would recommend highly is, even if they say the animal has had all of their shots.. they probably aren't telling you correctly. The place I went said that to me, turns out she only had the rabies shot.

I only found out because when I took her home, she got my other cats sick almost immediately. The vet that was in the place I adopted her was crappy. I took her to my normal vet instead and he concluded that she not only didn't get the shots she was supposed to she, had ear mites, and upper respiratory infection, and herpes. We are still (3 years later) battling the herpes. He also discovered that her left hip pops in and out of socket from time to time. Which indicates that she was most likely stepped on or kicked in her past situation.

I couldn't give up on her though. I love her with all of my heart. She is my favorite cat. She may not want to be a lap kitty because of her leg, but she is literally the sweetest cat I have.

They know when they have been given a good home. I think Bella just needs more work from her foster owner before she is ready to be adopted. What are her techniques for battling Bella's shyness?
