had a couple of messages of kind folks asking about hurricane preparations for me and my family. if irene hits how shes *supposed* to, me and my crew will be just fine. If she comes east a little, we may be in trouble. Will be tying down loose stuff outside tomorrow and otherwise trying to windproof stuff as much as possible, and move the car into the middle of the yard (where trees/limbs *shouldnt* fall on it, if it comes to that).
I know we have several members down a little closer to the coast than I am, please keep them in your thoughts, as they are in for a rougher time than I. To everyone down that way, evacuate if youre told to, and dont forget your pets! Batten down the hatches and tuck in for a rough day coming...
I also have friends out on ocracoke, which is an itty bitty island that sticks out into the atlantic..and irene is headed right for it.Most of my friends are staying on the island (stubborn mules!),even with a mandatory evac notice -so keep the village and residents in your thoughts too please!
as I said... tuck in folks, were in for a rough ride!

Yeah, just in time to blow the buildings off the foundations the earthquake cracked.

Hmm, that EEK pumpkin just isn't EEKy enough.
Anyway, good luck. We always have people that refuse to evacuate down here. Part of the time they're fine, it's the state being overprotective. In other cases the entire area is flattened. Also people remember previous times when they were not allowed back after the hurricane so they refuse to leave again. Or they have pets and no pet shelter in the area. It's tough to make that call.
The farther north you go the less experience people have with hurricanes, hopefully people will prepare properly and not laugh it off. LED flashlights! Go buy them!

well, ocracoke is used to them, as are hubby and I. whats concerning is that weve had a lot of transplants to the state in the past decade...and not a whole lotta hurricanes, especially bad ones. which means a lot of folks who may not know what to do. Like my daughters teacher who told the kids to get in a bathtub with a mattress over them. (maybe for tornados... not quite so much for hurricanes which ummm, last a little longer and dont carry that mad short intensity twisters do... LOLOLOL) that said, ill take a hurricane over a tornado anyday, but unfortunately, tornados can and do spew off from them. and really, as the storm sits right now, that would be a more viable immediate threat for us, anyways.
other than tie stuff down, not much else to do but sit and wait it out and see where she hits and what she does... till then its bucket up water (we have a well, so if power goes, water goes- something else a lot of folks might not realize) and get the candles and flashlights and all in an easy to access place.
lets hope we dont need them!Never jump into a pile of leaves with a wet sucker. - Linus

Even if Irene doesn't hit here, the damage has been done to civilization.
I work at a bix box home improvement store. I've been yelled at, cursed out and I pretty sure some of the customers were going to jump the counter (or crawl through the phone line) and beat me up because we ran out of generators today. People are animals.
I stocked up water and picked up some extra flashlights. I've also offered to let my friend and her mom crash at my place since where they live tends to flood. I hope it goes out towards the ocean. I don't think my friends can survive another Floyd. They lost both their business and a lot of things at home. They had a massive collectables collection (figures, comics including first editions, Halloween/horror stuff) that was ruined. Their house is already falling apart too, but they haven't had money to fix it. This could do them in. I don't want to think about it.
I wish everyone luck. I know we're due for a big storm, but I'd rather not see it happen.

I'm glad we got our generator fixed! We got gas for it yesterday, we've got a propane cooktop in the kitchen so I don't worry about meals, we're gonna get some buckets with water for flushing & such. We have a Generlink hookup under our electric meter so we plug the generator into it, turn off all the breakers, turn on the generator then pick the breakers you need to use & turn them back on. It's pretty convenient & cool.
We don't lose power often so I'm hoping we won't need it but better to have it & not need it. The previous owners put the Generlink in & the also left us the generator, we just pay an extra $5 for the link.
Right now it's looking like it will hit late Saturday nite. We've got a wedding to go to on Sat. nite too but I think it's gonna miss most of it, unless it speeds up or spreads out further.Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, the best damn little band you should be listening to!

Some more tips for people who have not had to live thru hurricanes and the aftermath:
First off, plan on being self sufficient for 3-5 days before city, county, FEMA, etc, gets help/power to your area.
Have plenty of water - fill the bathtubs with water and in a pinch you can drain the water in your hot water heater. Have bleach on hand to purify water.
Have enough food for a week; stores may open, running on a generator, but will not have refrigerated/frozen items.
Fill all cars up with gas before the storm.
Refill any prescriptions in advance.
Have a battery operated radio (and plenty of batteries) for updates.
Beware of the calm of the eye, there's more to come and the back winds are often worst.
Be prepared for flooding.
Locate your homeowner's insurance policy and have it accessible.
Have cash on hand because the ATM's will not be working.
Be Safe Everyone!!

Don't forget the pets!! Bring 'em in if they're out & make sure you've got enough food for them too. Which reminds me, I need gato food but I'm not sure I wanna brave the stores tonite, maybe tomorrow or I'll just hit 7-11 for a few extra cans. They mostly eat wet & dry scrip food, but I mix it with regular Friskies to make it go further & I think I'm down to 2 cans of Friskies.
