Well I know a lot of you have been there. I lost my hard drive on my 8 month old laptop. Of course I have no back-up. I lost all of my Halloween sketches, links, some photos, ideas, previous orders, lighting programs... I thought the hard drive would have lasted longer.
I going out to buy an 8 gig usb (thumb) drive. I should have known better. It will definitely put me behind for this year!![]()

I just got an external drive yesterday, just for that reason! Made back up and will make dvd backups of all too.

Oh that sucks! That's a good reminder though. (There's all kinds of services that offer online storage which is great if your house gets robbed or burns down. There's a happy thought.)
Are you sure the info is gone? I'm pretty sure I had a friend who managed to recover a lot of data of his hard-drive by sticking it in the freezer for a bit. I have NO idea how this works - but I think it worked for him. (I'd ask him but his basement just flooded so I think he's got other stuff on his mind.) It depends on how it failed though.
So if you haven't already, you might want to see if there's any way to rescue the data.
I've read some stuff about hard-drives. Apparently they have a really high fail-rate for the first few months, and then it drops. Then it starts to climb back up at about three years. So it's weird that yours went at 8 months. I think they're always a bit of a gamble though.

Gobby,
I never heard of sticking it in the freezer. I'll have to look into it.
I'm also going to check into data recovery. Even if I only get 50% back it would be better than nothing.
The embarrassing part is that I run the back-ups at work. I guess I'm too lazy at home!

I hear his flooding isn't too bad, so I've shot him an email. Maybe I'm mis-rememering his success. But hopefully I'll find out soon. Doesn't seem like it should work at all to me, but you never know.

I've been debating for a month or two about backing my stuff up I might just do it this week. I'd lose all my family pictures sigh but there's so much stuff I just don't want to do it.
