Well, that summer heat is here lol for me anyways lol. its been about 104 here, and this is my first summer living in the desert so I am NOT use to the heat.We have central ac, but I dont want to run it 24/7 during the summer, im sure the bill would be not to friendly. So this morning I bought a portable swamp cooler/evap cooler what ever ya want to call them, for my bedroom, so my question is has anyone used them ? and do they work good ? I paid 200 dollars for it, so I am hoping it works good.I do live in the desert so its dry air, not humid,I did some research on them saying they work great in dry air, but I would like to hear from real people if the have one how it works.Ok guys thanks in advance to anyone who replies !

We only have a swamp cooler. I'm not so sure about the portable kind, but you want the evaporative side OUTSIDE, and the side blowing the air INSIDE, or it's just going to be a humidifier. (so a window mount would be fine...) Sure, it'll feel fine right where it's blowing, but everything else will just get humid, this lowering it's effectiveness over time.

    Tips for the swamp cooler:
    • Contrary to central air, you have to have a window/door open. Thus, I'm not sure how well they would work in conjunction.
    • Have that window/door open where you want it cooled...If the cooler is upstairs, and you need to cool the basement, open window downstairs and feel the air flowing right to it.
    • Put a piece of paper towel on the open window screen, open it until the paper towel falls, then close it just enough that it stays up. This is the optimal airflow of the swamp cooler.
    • Swamp Coolers are rated for Sq feet...always buy a size bigger than your house needs.
    • The corrolary, Always buy a bigger replacement pump than your cooler needs. It'll last longer and increase output just a tad.
    • Use the blue pads. I like to buy the roll and cut them double thick.
    • You'll get about 20-25 degrees worth of cooling out of a swamp cooler.
