I hope this isnt against the rules, if it is, please delete this post.

I have been thinking about setting up a blog/fun site for myself, (not competition for this forum or anything) maybe sell a couple side props on the side to fund my Halloween obsession.. I am clueless about domain hosting etc.. i registered a website name. But can anyone provide some good next step suggestions on hosting/web development etc?

    thanks!

Check out byethost.com. There's free hosting there. I have had a lot of luck with them.

i use dreamhost for my side halloween business. its cheap and you get a merchant account. so you can actually sell things via your site.

You could just get a blog, so yourname.blogspot.com or any of the other ones. Its a sub domain. Or you can do what you said and buy a domain and then host it, but then, unless you want to use templates that one of the companies might give you, you have to know how to create a website and have a ecommerce site and it could get complicated. But if you want to do what LadyAlthea said you could get a merchant account (will be more expensive probably) and then use one of the templates and follow the directions.

I just find that a blog would be cheaper to do (free subdomain and hosting), use their templates (unless you know how to code a site. not hard just takes time) and you could post pictures with the price and use a paypal buy-it-now button under it, so if someone wanted to purchase something then you wouldnt have to have an ecommerce site and it makes everything easier.

There are plenty of good host companies out there though if you want to go with hosting your own domain.

Another option would be to buy your domain and hosting, create a blog and redirect it to your website so your website is actually the blog but its integrated into the domain and hosting itself so you will have your own domain name instead of the sub domain of any of the blog sites.

    Just some options.

I have been using hostgator for several years and have had zero downtime, unlike other hosts I've had in the past.

godaddy is having a sale right now. Get the domain name for $1.99 if you buy another option, so I got the webhosting option for $3.99/mo (for 1 year). Total was $50.51 for 1 year. But I agree about blogspot being good and free too. Depends on what your needs really are.
