Hey Forum,
Since you guys are always so excellent with helping me with any Halloween help that I need I figured I'd throw a Non-Halloween question out to you all.
Our family has been toying with the idea of getting a dog. The kids have been absolutely begging for one so I think we will add a little furry companion to our home soon. My question is about the breed of dog. We would really like to stick to a medium sized dog without a huge amount of long fur...to try to minimize the amount of fur around the house.
Does anyone have any recommendations on excellent family dog breeds that match the above preferences in regard to size and fur type? I have always LOVED pugs and luckily they are on most of the best for family dog lists that I have seen. Lately I have come across a cross breed. This is a cross between a pug and a beagle...a puggle. What an adorable pup!! Does anyone have any experience with this cross? Can anyone offer any other suggestions to a good dog breed?
A little background on my family...there are 5 of us. Hubby, myself and three children ages 10 (girl), 7 (boy) and 4 (girl).

As I was going up the stair, I saw a man that wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today...Oh how I wish he'd go away.

Ohhhh, that pup is soooo cute! We've been looking at the poodle cross-breeds too. We ran into a Snoodle (schnauzer & poodle) on vacation and fell in love with it. The mini is too small but they make different sizes: mini, standard and giant. Giant is the one for us. It's about 70 pounds. Here's a video someone made of a giant and mini snoodle playing:
The reason we really like that dog is our previous dog was a mutt but we are starting to think that she was a giant schnauzer/Labrador mix. Other than the flying fur, we loved her to pieces! Very gentle, playful and loyal sweetie. Here's a picture of her:

Hey Boo Baby!
I know you don't like the hair, but I've always felt Golden's are the absolute best family dog. My friend has a puggle and it just yaps like crazy, then again, maybe it's just hers. Labs are pretty good, too and less hair. What kind of activity level is your family? Do you definitely want a small breed? Check out Petfinder.com, there are lots of groups from Ontario on there, and they'll usually say if the dog is good with kids/cats/other dogs or not. Good luck!

Terra- beautiful dog!
Barbarella- have to agree 100% about Goldens. We have a yellow lab/ Golden mix. She is the sweetest dog I've ever seen.
Personnally, I am a hard core German Shepherd lover. Perfect dog= wonderful temperment; loyal; couragous; very gentle yet protective of family; intelligent and absolutely magnificient dogs. I could go on & on about how wonderful the breed is!! But the downside of owning a GSD= check with your insurance agent to make sure they don't have restrictions with owning one. Although the #1 biter is a dauschund/ weiner dog, the insurance companies have a problem with Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, and Shepherds.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. We ended up buying a 14 week old puggle puppy named Chloe.
She is an absolute joy, we all adore her.
This is Chloe.

All pups are cute but they don't stay that way. Best small to medium dog I can think of with a great loving personality is a Beagle. Great watch dog bark too.
What doesn't kill you can still make you walk funny.

I do hope everyone will at least consider a shelter pet if they're looking to expand their family. Many purebred animals also end up there (and there are rescues devoted to specific breeds) and the animals in general tend to be pretty darn awesome despite not costing nearly as much $$$ or having inbreeding-related health problems that come with a designer dog/cat.

Chloe is ADORABLE!!!!!
I agree with Frankie's Girl; rescue dogs make fantastic pets! My Shepherd is a rescue and totally devoted to me... as I am to her.
And... my lab mix is a rescue; and my cat was a stray.
And in talking with alot of forum members about their pets, I've realized that there are a TON of members who have 'rescued' their pets.
