In one of the tutorial videos, I recall he said that it's about a 6 hour project. This would not include the drying time for the glue/paint. I think right now I have 3-4 hours into each one. The painting will be time consuming to get the desired detail. given the amount of time until Halloween, I'm good spending time on them. I don't think I would have started these in September though.

While looking for witch related things for this years haunt, I came across Gourdin Fester's tutorial videos on these really cool looking "rot jars", or witch lanterns/swamp lanterns/whatever you want to call them. I've never worked with paper mache before save for projects in school so this is a fairly new endeavor for me. These are just too cool not to try. We'll have 5 in total in the front yard display part of our haunt and here are some progress pics. Rot Jar 1 - YouTube

These two are being made by DSS, formerly Dark Side Studios. I wanted witches to compliment my Death Studios Swamp Witch, but Death Studios other witches didn't have the look I was after. Dark side had these two and they'll look great with Swamp Witch.

Can you describe the space? How much area do you have to work with? one car? two car?. Is the garage attached to your home or detached? We've used our garage before and now have a free standing structure that is 12' wide by 24' long. How many visitors do you normally have on Halloween? This would determine what you need to do for traffic flow (having both an entrance and exit door vs just a space where people walk in and look around. Give some more info and it would be easier to give...

I have a length of waxed twine that I used for a handle on my latest one. I think it will hold up well. You an easily coat twine with beeswax to give it a protective quality. The twine handle was so much easier than the wire too!!

I placed my order today for a Distortions alien prop. I'm having it custom painted with a green wash. We're doing a 50's SyFi for our entrance room for the haunt this year.

It's about 19 inches between the wing tips. I recall these being sold by Big Lots a few years ago but haven't seen them since and not sure who makes them. I paid 10 for this and remember them being about $16.00 when new? Check ebay and also some of the online Halloween retailers to see if they still carry them. Might still be available.

Stock photos of the three witch masks. I have Swamp Witch from Death Studios, pictured first. I think the other two will be a great compliment to her

Really glad you posted this doto! I had thought of using a twine "handle" but was concerned over how it would hold up. For as much use as they'll see I think this might be the way to go and a lot easier than the wire. I still plan to make a few more hanging ones so will def give this a shot. Thanks my friend!

Thanks! We're doing a witch theme this year so will be using these in place of the pvc candles we made last year. I'm happy with them but will wrap the wire handles in something to make them more organic looking.

Not sure why the base coat is that color. I like these two masks as they have that old storybook witch look to them. I had Cackle a few years back and sold it to another haunter like a dummy so am getting another of her and also Meg. I have DS Swamp Witch so these will compliment that one nicely. The three have just enough differences between them so they don't all look alike. Can't wait to see them finished. My last copy of Cackle was thick as a tire! lol!

Still have more to make but have a few done so far. Some will hang in trees and others will be placed in the front yard scene and in the haunt itself. I followed SK Austin's You tube tutorial and they really came out pretty good! Halloween How-To - Witch's Lanterns - YouTube

Wasn't sure where to put this so figured here was good. These are two new masks being made for our haunt this year. Paul at DSS masks is doing some custom paint on them but he sent me this pic of them before paint and hair work. They are prepped and will soon be done and on their way to their new haunt home. I'll post some finished pics as well but just thought this was cool.

Scored 8 rolls of jute netting and a neat wooden bowl from another haunter selling off some things. These will see good use in our witch house this year.

Yes, "Spoopy" originated from a misspelled sign at Halloween time that was supposed to say "Spooky". Someone took a photo of said sign and posted it on the internet and it stuck as a descriptive term and internet meme, from there, as a word to use for silly, incorrect, goofy, (basically spooky and funny at the same time) Halloween things. It wasn't made up purposely...it just was a funny misspelling that stuck and spread like wildfire across the net...and never stopped, lol.

I might meander over there and take a look and check if my store has one. Now I just need to get my hands on another coupon. (My last one expired.) But I'm not super worried, even though it's a great price it's still kind of steep for folks around here. Plus because I live in the Bible Belt not everyone appreciates Halloween the way we do!
I hope I don't end up eating my words when I find out it sold out!

I just watched your YouTube video on the CVS headless horseman. Nice job! I might actually have to think about this one! It doesn't fit in this years theme but he looks so good and that it might be worth getting it for use down the road.
    Oh crap..... I think I'm a hoarder!
