Filet crochet is basically *Dc. Chain 1, skip 1 chain, Dc in next stitch, Repeat from* going across. The filled in spaces are where you do not skip but fill in with a Dc. In this manner you can make any design you want on an open mesh-like background.
I crochet, but only know the basics. I've never heard of filet crochet. How good do you have to be to do it. It looks pretty hard.
