John Carpenter's The Thing A shapeshifting alien that can imitate any life form has been frozen in the Antarctic ice for 100,000 years. It thaws and tries to assimilate a 12-member team at a research base, presumably in hopes of eventually doing the same with the world's population. This 1982 film is considered to be a remake of the 1951 classic. It is not based on the earlier movie but rather on the original novella, Who Goes There? I like both movies but in different ways.

Didn't know that. I would like to see that too. Last movie was The Mist Customers are trapped in a supermarket as a strange thick mist containing bloodthirsty extrademensional creatures surrounds, the store. I like the movie, although I'm not crazy about the ending. Stephen King likes the ending even though it differs from the ambiguous ending of his novella.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch After toy store owner Harry Grimbridge narrowly escapes being killed, he is admitted to a hospital clutching a Halloween mask and ranting, "They're going to kill us!" Another assailant sneaks into Harry's room and brutally kills him, and after he is found dead, Dr. Dan Challis investigates, accompanied by Harry's daughter, Ellie. Halloween III does not fit with the Halloween series. Halloween was originally intended to be an anthology series, with a...

House on Haunted Hill 1959 Five guests are invited to a party by millionaire Frederick Loren in a huge stone house on a hill overlooking Los Angeles. He offers to pay $10,000 to all who stay locked in for the night. The movie takes place in the Ennis-Brown House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The house has been featured in several other films.

Day of the Dead 1985 After the world is overrun by the dead, a group of scientists in a large underground fortification are trying to come up with a solution in their lab. Sharing the facility is a group of soldiers under command of a tyrannical captain. This is the last in the original Dead trilogy after Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead. I think Night and Dawn are more groundbreaking, but I like this one too. The underground facility was shot in the Wampum mine, a former...

Pet Sematary A tale about an ancient burial ground and those that fail to heed the warning that the ground is sour. Based on the Stephen King book of the same name, I think this is one of King's best screenplays of those I've seen.

The Hills Have Eyes 2006 A vacationing family traveling to California takes a detour through the New Mexico desert and wrecks their SUV, and the stranded group are terrorized by mutant victims of nuclear testing. A violent, graphic movie and another rare example of a remake that I like.

Creepshow An anthology of five tales. Corpses come back for revenge, alien weeds overwhelm a man and his farm, a monstrous beast devours people at a college and cockroaches infest a sterile penthouse. Better than it sounds IMO. I didn't know until fairly recently that Stephen King's son, Joe, played the young boy in the wraparound story.

Don't be Afraid of the Dark 2010 Alex is having a 19th-century Rhode Island mansion restored. Alex's young daughter, Sally, comes to stay with him and his girlfriend Kim, and tiny malevolent creatures eventually emerge from a sealed ash pit in the basement. Wasn't too bad. I like Katie Holmes, and Bailee Madison reminds me of my niece, which helped. I didn't realize that this was a remake until after I had first seen it.

Mr. Sardonicus In the 19th century, Marek Toleslawski defiles his father's grave to retrieve a winning lottery ticket. The shock of seeing his dead father's face causes his own to freeze in a hideous grin. Later on, under the name Baron Sardonicus, he will stop at nothing to restore his face, including torture and murder. I seem to be the only person I know that likes this film, but I never claimed to have good taste in movies.

The Thing is one of my favorites too. I just saw John Carpenter's Vampires. After killing 9 vampires hiding in an old house in the New Mexico desert, Jack Crow and his team of Vatican-funded vampire slayers are celebrating at a motel and are attacked by Jan Valek, a master vampire. Jack and his partner Anthony Montoya are the only surviving team members. With the help of an inexperienced priest and a hooker bitten by the master, they attempt to track Valek down. This was based on the...

The Abominable Dr. Phibes A disfigured madman, thought to be dead, plots to exact vengeance on nine members of the medical team that he believes to be responsible for the death of his wife. He uses creative and gruesome killing methods inspired by the plagues of Egypt described in Exodus. A cult classic that, despite a few revealing mistakes, I enjoy watching once in awhile.

(this post is in reply to Moony_1's original post - I'm not commenting on any other post in this thread at this time) What a wonderful time we live in, where so much of the worlds information is just a few keystrokes and clicks away, and everyone has the opportunity to find something to complain about. Cultural appropriation is a thing. It does indeed happen, and in many ways it isn't bad - in some, it's downright despicable (said with Daffy Duck lisp and slobber). Usually, it's a matter...

30 Days of Night In Barrow, Alaska during an annual period of 30 days of darkness, the residents are attacked by a large pack of vampires. A few survivors try to stay hidden until the sun comes up, while the vampires ransack the homes. This movie got mixed reviews. I like several vampire movies, and this is one of them, even though it is uneven at times. These are not romantic vampires but more like vicious animals.

28 Days Later Jim wakes from a coma in a hospital in London to find that the city appears to be deserted. The first people he finds are in a state of murderous rage from a virus that has infected most of the population. The infected pursue him, and he is rescued by two other survivors, Selena and Mark. They flee to their hideout and are safe for the time being. One of my favorite post 2000 horror movies. Turns out that Stephen King is a huge fan of the movie.

The Blob 1958 I posted the 1988 version on 7/5/16. About the same summary for 1958 as 1988 except that the Blob in this movie was red instead of pink. I like them both, but 1958 is my favorite of the two.

I also just watched The Conjuring 2 Lorraine and Ed Warren battle another demon, this time in London at the home of an abandoned mother and her four children. In this one, the youngest daughter appears to be possessed instead of the mother. I thought The Conjuring was a little better, but I also liked 2. I particularly liked the house with it's cracked walls and shabby and dingy appearance that the mother was apparently not able to keep up.

Hard to decide so I picked the first five that came to mind that I liked. Insomnia Pet Sematary 'Salem's Lot Cujo Christine Insomnia is rather long, so if you don't like long books, you might not care for it. I didn't include Carrie because you are already reading it.

Ugly Joe replied to a thread Atmosphere Effects: How can I make fake dust? in Halloween Props
Ive had decent luck with creating a dusty, old, glass effect using hairspray and talcum powder. Spray the glass with the hairspray, and immediately blow on a handful of powder towards the glass - distance helps, so the powder diffuses more before it hits the hairspray. It stays quite well, until it gets decently wet, at which point it will begin to wash away (temporary, but still pretty durable until washed).
