Ugly Joe replied to a thread Prop Showcase: How to waterproof in Halloween Props
I've used latex and acrylic paints both in outdoor use on paper mache, and they hold up quite well without further weather proofing (well, at least in the light rains we have here - nothing compared to the heavy stuff some people receive). The one thing to watch out for, and this will be true for any material you use to weatherproof mache, be certain your coverage is sufficiently complete. I found this to be the case on a witch head I had put together - the paint on the face held together...

My rudimentary drawing of the first build I am going to tackle this year. I think I am a better builder then an artist! This was just an example of how my drawing turned into one of my facades. But it turned out like this so hopefully the next one will be fine. :(

When they made Psycho 1998, it was almost a scene for scene, line for line duplicate of the classic Psycho 1960 with no changes except color and cast. That made it seem pointless. A good remake needs to be a little different but not totally different. I think Rob Zombie had the right idea when he remade Halloween, but I like the 1978 version much better. Nice try though.

Bang for the buck, I would say Los Angeles!!! There is so much cool stuff. Not sure about first week, but there are tons of haunts and yard haunts!!! I won't go on vacation that time of year because there is WAY too much fun stuff here. Halloweentown and cool events.

Oh and for sure with the gauges and dials on my super secret prop after the steam garage is done. The steam garage is the setting for the prop I am most excited for this year!!! Lots of dials, gauges and lights on that one for sure. I am so excited I might start it before I make the garage facade!!!!!

So I did google "steampunk Batman" and I am super inspired. I don't think I am even remotely talented enough to dream I could do a steampunk Batman costume justice. I am definitely not a costume guy. However I wish I could incorporate it into my theme if I was able to create one. Gotham is always an inspiration for me when I think of my yardhaunt though. I dream of making my work more gritty but steampunk at the same time. I hope to achieve that with the facade I am about to start, which will...

Holy crap! That would be an awesome costume!! A steampunk Batman? Whoa cool idea. I actually use Gotham as inspiration but it ends up looking cheerier when I make stuff. I want to be more gritty in the future.

That is a good question. I would like to sound like I am organized and technical, but to be wholly honest, its all still sitting in the garage. I have some reinforcements in town visiting so it will possibly get stored up in the rafters of the garage while I have some help. That way I can get started on phase 2(and park a car in there as well). I built the panels to store flat. It actually is not that bulky when broken down. This is an example of a single panel. They are 4 foot wide...

Thanks for the words of encouragement about my pooch - there's always a lot of second guessing at the end, whether one is doing a mercy, or pulling the plug too soon. In this guy's case, even the vet thought he was on the way out. But, it does feel better having people help me along - thank you again!

Thanks! Great ideas. For sure going to add more steam! Been researching new fog machines. I did have a grate and pipes with steam in 2014. The grate was above the door of the clocktower.

Ugly Joe replied to a thread Other: foil backed foam board ?? in Halloween Props
I've found this stuff to carve very well, once you get the foil off (which is a horrible pain in the...patience). I've carved most of a skeleton out of this stuff - ribs are tough, but I think that'd be true with any foam. Finger bones are easy, and you just slide them over some wire to make hands - dust some spray paint on them (unlike styrofoam, this foam doesn't dissolve with spray paint solvents), and you have modifiable, weatherproof bones. Beware on long bones - this stuff doesn't...

Last year (2014) I was able to pretty much finish "phase 1" of our yardhaunt! A few small details didn't get done but for the most part I got the big pieces finished. We are going with a steampunk theme. There is a clocktower, storefront, boiler and crates.

We are expecting more kids this year. We were somewhere in the 100 to 200 range. That was because we are brand new to the neighborhood and to be honest most people didn't quite understand what was going on. Set up will start 2 weeks in advance this year so that will help. Also we will be running Friday night as well so that might increase traffic.

This is one I save to watch during Halloween season. You're right. This is not Halloween, but it makes me feel like Halloween. My favorite Halloween horror movies are Halloween (1978) followed by Halloween II only because it is a sequel. It's not as good, but I like it. I'm in the minority on my third one, Halloween III. I think this movie would be more popular if it wasn't associated with the Halloween series. I also save these for Halloween season. There are many more, as I have a...

It's Alive (1974) "It was born three days ago. It has killed seven people. Its parents are human beings. Whatever it is, it's alive! " This one was actually pretty scary when I first saw it in 1974.
