Things been okay, I guess, the weather has been horrible here, we are almost twice less hot than normal tempurature. It's been raining, cold and humid. Barely any sunshine lately. Halloween wise, due to the weather, I didn't yet approach anyone to do a pro haunt yet. To be honest, not sure I'll bother this year. I did build a few props early this spring, like a LADY IN BLACK and another SILENT HILL nurse. I just need to finish my PYRAMID HEAD, and stains some skelly. I am so glad for you, may I...

If the money is a real issue, and it sounds like it might be, go with that. If she offers to pay, you might not have any recourse but to go with it. You can be very up front about the shoes though. I've been to weddings where bridesmaids don't have shoes that match exactly. You can get the same color but a style that is comfortable for you, and she, as your friend, should accept that. Fugly bridesmaids dresses will never go out of style so you might have to suck that one up, but again if you...

Trex, that marker is gorgeous! I periodically go through this thread to catch updates and am in awe of the detail you all incorporate into your home made stones. The store bought stones simply can't compare to the home made ones!

Thanks! I got the angel statue a few years ago at Big Lots. I got the last one they had and built the stone around the statue. It's really perfect for a gravestone.

Just to add to the advice already given, we do much the same as you first talked about; rebar lengths driven into the ground about a foot or so, and the pvc legs slid down over these. They hold fast and won't tip over even in windy conditions. For the zombies, we drilled holes in the soles of the shoes and the rebar went through the holes. The witches are also on rebar and their dresses cover the pvc legs.

I use electrical conduit to stake my creatures in from the waist down. I found it to be inexpensive, and easy to cut. Same principle applies as rebar. Use a sledge to pound in the straight pieces. Afterwards you can use a conduit bender to shape the poles to add a little bit of a pose. This guy below is walking using a one piece stand that I bent around. But the same principle applies using two poles.

I saw a toymaker's blog video on making some really cool refinements to sculptures using wax. Real amazing guy who was nice enough to share his techniques http://blog.makezine.com/2013/02/05/make-your-own-toy-sculpting-wax/ But the ideal temperature for his wax mix was very hot. It was thin as water going into the molds. Extremely hard to seal them off and keep the wax in the mold. I admit I'm a novice and was probably doing something wrong. I had a much easier time with Monster Clay....

I use some of these as well. The muscle ones are pretty cool. I use Vaseline as a release agent. I recently invested in the theatrical two-part foam. These were made with hardware spray can foam a few years back. A lot of forum members have seen these photos (so please excuse the re-post)

Every good monster statue needs a detailed set of hands right? This year I am making a whole new set of hand molds, based on various states of human decay. From normal male/female examples to been dead for a long time with the bones showing. I found hands hard to sculpt in clay because the model needs to be fairly rigid to make to a decent mold out of. They also seemed to be hard to cast because of the small cavities. So I switched to monster clay. Cool stuff that is easy to work with. I...

Often times you can derive a haunt name based on the street you live on or the city you live in. for example; Terror on Bull Run or Bull Run Horror. We live in Erie, PA. so put a twist on the name and called ours EERIE MANOR. You're pretty much only limited by your imagination.

Thanks Intellagirl! I had to look up the two terms above. But when I did, I saw exactly what you are talking about. It sticks out now that you point it out. I made a stone mold of the sculpt this past weekend because my working time with my clay concoction had come to an end. But I think I can make the adjustment by filling in a couple of the back teeth.

Don't have actors screams in people's face. Not scary! Have actors walk very slowly to the people, not saying a word.. much more scary!

Key to a good scare is to have a matching distraction. They are looking for the scare so trick them into thinking it's the distraction. Then nail 'em with the real scare! :)

Hi Jim, catching up with everyone. Is your haunt this year coming along? We just finalized our 'theme/story' for this year and now, the preparations! We're going to go with a story/haunt based on one of the tombstones I made....Little Rosie. You can see her and her grave in my pictures under "my work". I did a 're-do' of her headstone, she now has a last name, same verse. And now a background story to base our haunt on! I'm excited!

No im not a member of AzHaunters.com, i rarely am able to get on this website because of my packed schedule right now. I worked for a pro haunt in 2010, with the Crypt and Asylum at fiesta mall, they were awsome and treated all of their actors really well. You should check them out sometime.

Steal Like an Artist

by JustJimAZ on 04-11-2012 at 06:17 AM
I present you with some excerpts from Austin Kleon's new book, ""How to Steal Like an Artist". Don't we all "steal" ideas, inspiration, techniques wherever we can find them?

Whether you think of yourself as an artist or not, it's hard for me to see haunters as anything else. The designing and construction of props seems as artistic a pursuit as sculpting. Even those who don't build anything design their show as carefully as any producer. Scare acting

La Isla De Las Munecas

by JustJimAZ on 03-21-2012 at 06:09 AM

There's a lot going on in the world.

So many places and cultures that explore themes similar to what we as haunters explore with our own little subculture. La Isla De las Munecas is a fine example.

It began as a haunt in the first sense of

Ray Bradbury at the dedication of a REAL Halloween Tree at Disneyland

by JustJimAZ on 03-15-2012 at 12:41 PM
This is a little video made by some people attending a private dinner with Ray Bradbury at Disneyland on Halloween 2007. How amazing would it have been to get invited to THAT party?
Bradbury talks a bit about his extraordinary life, and of course about the Halloween Tree. Disneyland now has a real oak tree that is the official Halloween Tree with a dedication plaque and appropriate decorations.

I hope you enjoy this. I know I did.

The Halloween Tree - On YouTube!

by JustJimAZ on 03-08-2012 at 08:02 AM
I admit I never heard of this until ShellHawk mentioned it on HauntCast.
It does not appear to be available on DVD at any price, but it is available on YouTube. My kids loved it, and I did too. It is a classic story explaining some of the meaning of our beloved holiday as it tells the story of some children fighting and sacrificing to save their friend.

Of Light and Shadow - Reprise

by JustJimAZ on 02-29-2012 at 07:45 AM
The last time I wrote of the use of light and shadow, it was specifically about Carl Dreyer's "Vampyr". In that film, shadows act of their own accord - sometime independently of the objects casting them, and sometimes with no original objects at all! It just seemed like such a great idea to me...
Anyway, I got to thinking about the other ways old B&W directors had to use light and shadow to create effects. They had no computers, of course, but they also could not simply
