Always loved that idea Dave, it's a simple and perfect mimic of that overpriced store bought version. :D Well, I've got nothing else yet. The original requirement of it being housed in a small taper styled candle I fear, may be out of range for using a mechanical solution. Remotely pumping air to a fabric type flame won't work w/o a insanely powerful (also read: loud) source of air or compressed gas as I found yesterday. I tested my adjustable flow pen type blower (from Matco),...

Heheh! Yep, something like that! :p Well, we'll figure some alternative out putting our collective heads together. Now I'ma do the best thing one can do for coming up with fresh ideas, which is to go work on another unrelated project for Halloween, and think of something else. That's how the best ideas just pop into your head, out of the blue, in my experience. :D

I should've noted above that I have multiples of each fan model, with the only exceptions being the Sunon and the not tested Silverstone 180mm AP182. In truth, I have another 180mm Silverstone, but it's the lower flow/pressure AP181, which you can get a small glimpse of in the front intake of my other computer behind the parts pics. They've all been a little mangled from swapping back and forth, but the long tapered square to rounds used for testing. Short square to...

Sure do, the interwebs always requires proof. And pictures speak louder by far than words. Power supply used for testing, no fan was under powered. :D

Good thinking Dave, that very well might work. :) You're very welcome OMB, I love to slake my own curiosity too. :D Yes, a CO2 cylinder from a paintball gun, may very well be ideal for this application with one caveat. I'd submit that it's likely to be very noisy using compressed gasses of any sort when activating the effect. Open the dump valve on an air compressor, and that will be a close approximation in the noise volume dept. ;) One thing I started to, but forgot to say...

Actually, I'm taking everything into account, including the size of the effect. You're welcome to think so, but it's the lack of accounting for the engineering in your suggestion is why it won't work the way you think. The extremely low pressure, and very low cfm of that 40mm fan aren't going to be able to overcome the back pressure encountered when tapering down to a small orifice. You will essentially end up with no airflow at all, while the fan motor overheats and burns the...

Sounds like a cool idea! Although, I honestly wouldn't bother with a 40 x 40 mm or smaller fan, and just so you know, you can get fans in a 25mm sq. size (slightly less than 1" square). I say don't bother, because frankly you're going to fall far short of the air pressure, and consequently volume of flow needed for a faux flame effect. 4-10 cfm and less than 1 mm/H2O static pressure just isn't enough, and that's the best you'll get out of a 40mm fan. I have (one of?) the highest flow...

Looks like you're off to a great start! :D Just a suggestion based on a bit of a experimenting I did before finalizing the coating for my columns. I used a thinner mixture, about 3.5:1 drywall mud/paint to make my monster mud, and then added play sand to get the texture I was looking for. In the end, you'd like a somewhat stiff consistency to the stone mud, which is best applied by stippling it on to your "canvas". The results look pretty authentic in my opinion:

All the good masks were already under notify me when available, but did pick up an Arkham aslyum and a cool womens mask, got some wigs got a bunch of shoes, and a few make up appliances. The funny thing was I had a living doll costume in my shopping cart from the 10 dollar sale, its back up to 32.99 but it kept it in my shoppiung cart at 10 so i fgiured what the heck, I left it there and bought it at that price.

While I like the idea of the Brutal Rust, I looked into it before starting my entrance project. Honestly it's way, way overpriced for what it is, in my opinion. At that price, I'd expect it to not only look like rust, but provide a bulbous flaking rust like texture, which it doesn't. Although my method takes quite a bit of time to apply, it's also less expensive by far (4 gallons for about $65 vs. $120 gal.), and does give the 3D appearance and feel of heavily rusted metal, except...

Oh, no doubt. I wasn't downgrading your purchase, it is a great deal for sure. :) Saving $$$ on the front end with the purpose of reinvesting the savings is never a bad idea. I heartily agree! ;) I was just pointing out, not even buying in true bulk as a manufacturer would, how much of a cost savings there is, even if one must purchase all of the parts outright vs. buying the pre-made one from Haunted Props. I should've made that more clear. Typing while the mind was elsewhere. Sorry, my...

    It's nice, but one could build one for a whole, whole lot less than $588. Explain? Sure, it's easy. Shopping list: (1) sheet of 1/2" plywood - +/- $22 (2) 8' 1 x 2's for the frame - $4

Looks great PTbounce! You did a fine job, and that's something to be very proud of! :D Don't even worry about the neighbor, in fact, use him for inspiration. Amusingly enough, I had the neighbors that "always win" the HOA's Best Decorated Yard contest come over to "see" (more like inspect it to see how much they'd have to spend, most likely) my haunt last year. Honestly, I couldn't care less if they up their game. I relish the idea of this neighborhood, which is already one of the...
