I've said it before I'll say it again, I don't care if it's store bought or homemade. Not everyone is crafty or has the time to be crafty so it's OK, for me it's the fun of getting the stuff & sending the stuff. My box will go out tomorrow. I'm finishing one little thing today then taking it to work to UPS off to my victim!!

In one of the tutorial videos, I recall he said that it's about a 6 hour project. This would not include the drying time for the glue/paint. I think right now I have 3-4 hours into each one. The painting will be time consuming to get the desired detail. given the amount of time until Halloween, I'm good spending time on them. I don't think I would have started these in September though.

While looking for witch related things for this years haunt, I came across Gourdin Fester's tutorial videos on these really cool looking "rot jars", or witch lanterns/swamp lanterns/whatever you want to call them. I've never worked with paper mache before save for projects in school so this is a fairly new endeavor for me. These are just too cool not to try. We'll have 5 in total in the front yard display part of our haunt and here are some progress pics. Rot Jar 1 - YouTube

These two are being made by DSS, formerly Dark Side Studios. I wanted witches to compliment my Death Studios Swamp Witch, but Death Studios other witches didn't have the look I was after. Dark side had these two and they'll look great with Swamp Witch.

Can you describe the space? How much area do you have to work with? one car? two car?. Is the garage attached to your home or detached? We've used our garage before and now have a free standing structure that is 12' wide by 24' long. How many visitors do you normally have on Halloween? This would determine what you need to do for traffic flow (having both an entrance and exit door vs just a space where people walk in and look around. Give some more info and it would be easier to give...

Oh unfortunately I didn't make it I found it at a thrift store a few years back. It's actually decor that's graces my apartment all year long I just usually have an Edison bulb in it :) but I'm sure there is a way one could make a lamp like that.

Oh lordy no! :D I'm just a huge fan. Plus he's far too hot for me to be around longer than about 10 minutes after a show, any longer than that & I'm pretty sure I'd spontaneously combust. I can pull my stuff together for about 10 minutes or so to talk to them after a show then I'm like Jekyl & Hyde except my Hyde is a blubbering 12 year old girl who descends into madness pretty quickly, just blubbering, crying & talking incoherently.:D I'm always willing to pimp them out though. I am almost done with my victim, a few more things to go, I wanted to do some crafting, but life has thrown a lot of stress at me, so I just plain am not up to it. so everything is thrift store or regular store bought, unless I decide last minute to do something

I am actually a lady!:D But I get that a lot since I have a dude as my avatar so I take zero offense when anyone thinks I'm a guy. The guy in the avatar is Roger Clyne & that's part of my screen name. It stands for Roger Clyne Is A God, he's the leader of the band in my sig line.

I have a length of waxed twine that I used for a handle on my latest one. I think it will hold up well. You an easily coat twine with beeswax to give it a protective quality. The twine handle was so much easier than the wire too!!

I aged it with wood stain dabbed on with a chip brush, then gently dabbed off the areas I wanted lighter with a cloth. I posed it by removing the locking joints in the shoulders and hips to make the arms and legs "floppy" so they could be set where I wanted. The fingers were wired, scored with a hot knife, then bent and glued into a grasping position. The skeleton I used was very cheaply made and had screws connecting the torso to the spine so I was able to just reposition the upper body by...

Hi, Hilda! I would love to submit a couple of your fabulous yard display photos for this upcoming article, but I would not do so without your permission. I will take no offense if you prefer not to share, but your yard is so great. Let me know what you think!

Wow! Just like old times. I thought I'd lost that skill.

    Thanks for letting me know.

Congratulations on the limb removal. I was worried you were gonna be stumped. We've had so many in-laws visiting I'm thinking of putting my family tree through the wood chipper. I'll be here all week.

Looks like we CAN just scrap the stupid paint off the mirror. Just gotta figure out what nasty little tool is safest for the glass. (My keys scratch everything else up, figured it might work on the paint.)

I am shocked - SHOCKED I tell ya. You mean there's just a mere mortal behind the curtain?

We initially wondered about the mirror but we saw another one there which had a scratch through the paint and thought...How hard could it be? We'll mess around.

It's not so much the organ part. Just looking for some kind of material that would be flexible enough to bend around a corner while strong enough to hold it's shape. We could buy rolls of veneer but it's not super cheap and I don' t know how well it would hold up without a backing. But I appreciate the response. Hope all is going well.

Hey you! Hope setup is going well.

I got two questions for the expert.
    1) We bought a mirror from Micheals that had a skull screened on the front of it - we want to take that off. Seems like a real mirror (it's heavy). Would the stuff you recommend for removing paint off blowmolds work? We don't want to damage the glass (I think the frame is a resin.)
    2) Working on the organ...we're modelling it very loosely on the Haunted Mansion version. The wood curves in the area where the keyboard is. Any thoughts on what we could user there? You just seem to know stuff.

No worries if you're too busy with setup to reply. We'll figure something out.

    Hey,
Those bats are super easy to make
All I did was make a paper bat pattern and transfer the pattern to a light weight piece of black material, cut it out, then I just pinned it to the existing hummingbird body. Painted the motor and ground stake black, and BAM, done
Oh, I painted the hummingbird black too
    Thanks for your nice comments!
