Years ago, when our children were very little, the most we had the time or money to do at Halloween was to carve a pumpkin for the porch, and to hang their little hand-made art work (and a few paper pictures from a classroom pack) on our walls, frig and windows. One of us would stay home to hand out candy, while the other got to take the kids Treating. As the years went by, we realized that all the kids had special memories of Halloween from visiting certain houses.
One guy had a fake casket with a hidden speaker set up in his garage. He would hide while talking into a microphone and encourage the kiddies to take their treats from the coffin bowl. Every child loved to go and see who was brave enough to reach into the coffin.
At the end of the night, another house was always the last one to visit because the mother made hot cinnamon and sugar donuts to hand out to the children AND the parents. After we closed up our own houses and turned out the lights, families would make the traditional trek to the "Donut Lady" and wait patiently while she dropped the batter in the hot oil back in her kitchen. We would stand on her porch and watch through the front door - which she kept open as much as to let the wonderful smell fill the air as to calm and reassure everyone that no one would leave empty handed.
Years went by. Our kids are grown and live in coastal cities - both East and West. My hubby and I - now empty nesters - decided a few years ago to become the "last house" for our neighborhood. Here on the forum - and soon in my new Blog - I hope to share some scenes from our own haunts and keep the fun going. Halloween Forum is the perfect place to get ideas to help make memories of Halloween that children and adults will think of for years to come!
I hope you enjoy these pix. Thanks for taking the time to look! BOO!
