I really need sleep. Did you mean fortune telling songs? That's really hard. There's a famous one called Fortune Teller by Benny Spellman. There are a lot of different versions of it, some better than others. Crystal Ball (styx), Chapter 24 (Pink Floyd. About the I Ching), Age of Aquarius, Gemini Dreams, Wheel of Fortune (Kay Starr), Sort of related to fortune telling (okay, maybe not) I'm looking over a 4-leaf clover, Luck be a Lady Tonight, good luck bad luck (skynard), Fly like an...

I just looked up Marie LaVeau. There are two versions of the same song. One is Dr Hook and the Medicine Show. That's the one I remember. But there's another version by Bobby Bare that's kind of country, and it's really good too.

Witchy songs ... I'm in my 50s, my choices will reflect that. I don't necessarily know the titles, but what I think are the titles should be pretty close. I Put a Spell On You. Witch Doctor. Black Magic Woman. Witch Queen of New Orleans. Season of the Witch. Witchy Woman, She's Just a Devil Woman with Evil on her Mind, That Old Black Magic (wasn't that Frank Sinatra? or Dean Martin?), It's Witchcraft (Sinatra), Witch's Promise (Jethro Tull), Marie LaVeau (don't remember. It was 60s or 70s and...

Found an eHow link to an easy crystal ball, using a cell phone and black fabric. It's a Madame Leota one, but it would make a fun party prop. I do not have a cell phone, and would not know how to use one (I have an older one with no screen, and it took me FIVE YEARS to figure out that the reason I could not make a call on it was that you had to press the send button. I thought if you dialed the numbers, the call went through, just like a real phone). Maybe I should have had kids. Please, God,...

Marigold, I know you weren't threadjacking. I wanted this idea to get its own thread before it became a threadjack. I didn't mean to accuse or make you feel bad. I REALLY love this idea. Unfortunately, I am over 50 and forget the ideas I had this morning (just got home from work). I work in the nutrition department of a hospital (passing trays to patients). Some of the patients are nursing home patients, and we have a rehabilitation hospital on one of our floors. Maybe I will ask....

I know you weren't. This was the right place to post it, since it is sort of similar. But it really does deserve its own thread. I laughed and laughed at the idea (first time I heard of it). I am going to go over to the new thread and see if anything has happened yet. Oh, how I wish my husband were born in October! It's a great idea!

Marigold, rather than threadjack this, put it as a separate thread. I think this is a wonderful idea, and I can't imagine anybody NOT looking at a thread about a haunted nursing home 50th birthday party! This is hilarious. Please start a new thread! I am not going to respond to this because I don't want to threadjack. But I will respond to a new thread! Oh, I wish my husband had thought of this for my 50th. His comes up next year, though ...

Why not just make new stickers? Is that possible? Soak the cups, remove the lids (try applying heat to melt the glue a bit), and apply new stickers.

They're hollow so they dry out more quickly, like the decorative sugar easter eggs with scenes in the middle (except no scenes for the skull). No filling required.

Mild spoiler alert. Disappointed in it so far (3-4 episodes in). Seems like they are bringing back half the people who died, including one who really didn't need to come back IMO. Really? Absolutely no imagination! You can tell the committees got into decision-making. This was such an imaginative program, and now it's dull. Perhaps it will improve, but I don't see it improving if that one person really is alive (could have been a dream sequence). And Destiny isn't hooking yet! I kinda liked...

diajoh replied to a thread Atmosphere Effects: Help with witch trials walkthrough in Halloween Props
Salem was Puritan, so plain, undecorated rooms would have been the style. Not very scary or Halloweeny, though there were some great gravestones. Not to mention, no witches got burned. They were mainly hanged or died of privation. Maybe not go with Salem at all, but with Europe. European ones did. Spain and Germany both had some pretty horrific trials. Or don't call it Salem. You can always go with Arkham, if you want to keep it in Massachusetts Bay. I grew up not far from Salem, and I...

Just google Hi Striker or High Striker. It's the carnival strong man game where you whack a lever and try to hit the bell on the top. Instead of degrees of strength (wimp, Popeye, etc), paint synonyms for scary: creepy, terrifying, frightening, spooky, etc. Diane

For those looking for unusual games: Have you seen the Cash Cubes at trade shows, where you have to guess how much money is floating around in a plexiglass cage? What if you used paper bats instead of dollar bills? I think it could be made cheaply (it's $2500 or so to buy, $300 to rent). I was daydreaming about a life-sized Halloween carnival midway, and what games there would be. They would have to really be doable. Games like Bag the Rat (you get a cloth bag and have to capture the most...

Fabric stores, even WalMart's fabric section, usually has camo material. I like the idea of the camo tarp. Craigslist or Freecycle are great resources. Ask for camo as well as military. Mention that you don't care about condition since it's for Halloween. You might get a lot of donations of ripped up stuff, easily fixed with duct tape (on the inside, LOL). You might get hunter's gear, which is a different pattern, but it will probably work. Post where you live. Someone might live close...

This child mummy appears to open and close her eyes, but it's an optical illusion due to a changing light angle. I expect it is rather like the eyes that follow you around the room. In any event, it would be a static prop that might cause a yelp. In the distant past, doing somthing similar, I have literally grabbed the phone book and called every number in it. When I was a telemarketer (before the no-call list) that was how we cold-called. As a recipient rather than a maker of cold calls, I usually disconnect if I don't hear a name and ID first thing. If they say "Can I talk to John?" I immediately hang up. If I hear "This is Suzie with VinylGrain Windows. May I speak t John?" it keeps me on the phone longer, and I may even make an...

Interesting ... I don't have cable, so I will have to wait for it to come to Netflix streaming. Brings to mind a question: is it more offensive to have actual freaks (dwarves, giants, hirsutism, morbidly obese, skin problems, amputees, thalidomide babies, deformities) than it is to have the equivalent of blackface: makeup and CG. When you know it is all fake, it is so nice and sterile. When it is real, you have to face yourself. Ah, I need sleep.

I went to the local Museo Latino last year to look at their Ofrenda and DotD stuff. I realize you want it to be Halloweeny, but it really isn't spooky. Lots of marigolds (paper ones). At least they're orange, right? The bowls and such were either wood or gourds, as I recall. And there were lots of papercuts as decoration. Photos weren't allowed. There's a bread called Pan de Muertos. It's a lot like a Christmas Stollen, or a big Hot Cross Bun. A large sweet bread. I bought one with a giant...

diajoh replied to a thread Static: Human spine design question... in Halloween Props
Another couple of thoughts: Museums, butchers that deal with game meat, zoos, veterinarians, animal control officers (or whoever cleans up road kill), local hunters. Legally the businesses may not be able to give you real bones, but that could depend on the state. Your spine may wind up looking like a Tyranosaurus built from deer and sheep bones, though.

Strange as this may sound, why not visit your local spine specialists -- they may have extra vertebrae, or may have had to build a spine in school and can give you details. Specialists include: chiropractors osteopaths Rheumatologists Orthopedic surgeons

I have a book called Twisted Cakes, that has a wonderful DotD skull cake. You can see a pic of it on Amazon, and the pictures on Amazon include construction, so if you are a cake maker you can figure it out. Basically, an 8-inch half-dome cake and three 8-inch round cakes will do it, along with frosting and fondant. The book also has a totally disgusting Three Musketeers bar crawling with maggots, LOL. http://www.amazon.com/Twisted-Cakes-Deliciously-Designs-Occasion/dp/0062134043

Or buy one toy, make a sand mold, and do plaster of Paris frogs. I think buying them would be easier and cheaper. And lighter. There's always origami, though they don't look much like frogs, or paper cut-outs (print and cut).

Salt dough, yeah, but the filling ... some half-baked ideas (no pun intended): 1) pumpkin-pie scented candles, melted and poured? A sprinkle of nutmeg or clove over the top before it solidifies. 2) Polymer clay, rolled out. Stuff the pie crust with anything, and top it with the polymer clay. 3) Soap. I vaguely remember whipping Ivory soap into a foamy clay. Maybe you can do that and color it? 4) Upholstery foam, cut to size and painted. If I remember my Crayola colors, burnt orange and raw...
