The light dimmers I was talking about are DC PWM, not phase controlled AC ones. They are only a couple of dollars (eBay example), but as I said they are not suitable for motors.
I wasn't saying that the failure when using them was the motor. On the contrary it's the switching FET in the dimmer that goes shorted, resulting in full speed no matter the knob position.
