Lost count, but we're figuring it was over 70 but probably less than 100. We average (when we count) anywhere between 50-150, so tonight was a success for us. We usually do very light on Friday night TOT due to high school football (around here it's VERY big) and parties if Halloween falls on the weekend, so we were surprised at the turnout. BUT we didn't have our first TOT until 7:30! They are getting later and later every year.

It seems to come in cycles as the neighborhood kids get "too old" to care about Halloween, and then some move away and new families with younger kids move in. Right now, my neighborhood is in the lots of older kids stage, so not nearly as much decorating as a few years ago. :(

MOD HAT ON This subject seems to come up every year. I would think it goes without saying but please do not vandalize or destroy public property. Do not attempt to rewire, short circuit or touch the wires. Do not shoot out using a BB gun or shotgun. Do not use lasers pointed up at the sky. All of that can get you fined and even jail time... or killed if you touch the wrong wire while fussing around with the insides. And also keep in mind that if you do successfully take out a light, and...

Frankie's Girl replied to a thread Pumpkins in General Halloween
Not sure how this translates weight and dollar wise, but I have a giant pumpkin around 40 pounds that we paid $15 for. We usually buy several average pumpkins that weigh around 10-20 pounds for $5 each. From what I understand tho, growing the carving/decorative pumpkins isn't as popular in Europe as it is in America/Canada, so they definitely will cost more there unfortunately.

All gone before midnight except for the carved JOLs - which stay lit and burn out on their own. We follow the circus concept of setup and takedown - overnight on both so it's like it just magically appeared and disappeared.

I use wooden stakes driven in at a slight angle and then lean the tombstone against that as I push the little metal stakes into the ground. So the stake is supporting the backside of the stone, and it leans into the stake slightly - most side/front wind won't budge them that way, it would only be strong winds from the backside that would dislodge the stones then. This setup works for me most of the time. I would also suggest trying to put the bamboo into the ground first (not a whole length...

A coworker friend that knows I'm "into Halloween" (hehehe) just gave me TWO of these! They are in pristine condition - no scratches or anything and look as if they are brand new! She said she'd had them forever, so they are originals not repros. wow! I looked them up, and they are 1960s litho tin toy noisemakers - and told her that they're fetching around $15 a pop if she wanted to sell them (I'd feel guilty if I didn't tell her what they might be worth) but she still wants me to have them...

If it is a light rain with no real wind, we usually use garbage bags, duct tape and some stakes to create little tents over the foggers and stuff. We drive in 4 stakes to the ground, then duct tape the garbage bag over the stakes so it forms a shelter but isn't touching the fogger (which needs air circulation and gets rather hot). If it's a more windy situation, I'd think that would effect your fog anyway so I'd probably not use them. I have heard of using rubbermaid/storage containers to...

I'd say first stop expecting so much of yourself and your friends. You are pushing your expectations so high that anything less than exactly what you envision will lead to disappointment. Don't do that that to yourself! You had a great turnout (seriously - 50+ people at a house party? and no one got shot or run over and the house didn't burn down? that equals successful party in my book). Stuff always breaks or fails or something goes wrong and the big thing is to just let it roll off your back...

Frankie's Girl replied to a thread Prop Showcase: My 50cent columns in Halloween Props
Those are quite lovely! Great job. :) I've got cardboard/foam columns and they have held up over 6 years at this point and that's including getting drenched a few times. I usually leave them out for at least two weeks each year too. I think if you know that heavy rain is coming, making them easy to pick up and get into a garage is a good idea, but the paint (if acrylic/latex) acts as a decent moisture barrier and those columns will hold up longer than you think!

I just started yesterday and should get the preliminary stuff completed today. Beautiful, but hot and a bit humid out there in my neck of the woods - 80˚ last I checked. Oh, and I soooo miss working nightshift. I am much more alert and feel better in the wee hours and feel like a zombie when I have to drag myself into to work at 8am every day. :)

Cutting it kind of close to get something set up for this season and still have a few days of actual haunt - I honestly don't see how you can get this done in time. You absolutely need to look into permits from your county for temporary events (just like a fall festival or traveling carnival) which might come with inspections for minimum safety codes. And absolutely will need liability insurance coverage in case someone gets hurt on the property. Without that, you're leaving yourself open...

Holy moly... that's a discontinued Lightning FX box with the Halloween exterior. Those things are hard to find now. (I picked up several about 6 years ago, and they're awesome!) Nice effect, and I'm going to have to check out the possibilities with the auxiliary jack into the unit. I usually just set up an extension cord with about 20 funkins on it and have them "sing" along with the music...

My hubby has glasses and refuses to get contacts as the idea of something in his eye freaks him out. SO we definitely end up having to do workarounds on the costumes. For the most part, we do lots of masks, and he tries them on with the glasses underneath to make sure they fit comfortably before we buy them. Or I make his costume/mask. Or he is something that could conceivably wear glasses (like "Mad Scientist"). I made Sam Hein from Trick R Treat with a great mask that really worked out...

You don't get the option for the custom title until after 500 posts, however. So Nightlites 13, you've got a little more to go! :D http://www.halloweenforum.com/forum-news-and-rules/54612-rankings-titles.html Scroll past the rules and you'll see Larry's post about the rankings/titles.
