Conversation Between beavervw and Pumpkin Butcher

  1. Here is another link for inspiration, http://www.steampunklab.com/lamps/1

Even some of the USA bulbs would look neat, especially some of the older Edison style bulbs or, the squirrel cage ones! You can get them here, http://houseofantiquehardware.com/s....category.33/.f

I played around with some ideas, but in the end as you said the in line nature won me over! Lowes and Home Depot both carry I believe a four inch tube bulb that I was toying around with, but attaching something on top would not be as easy!!

    Good Luck!!
  2. Thanks for the links!!!!
I may see if I can come up with something that would work with bulbs available here in the U.S. Although, the in-line nature of the euro bulbs have something to do with the cool look of your lamp. I'm going to kick it around for a while.
    Thanks again!!!!
  3. Haha, thanks for the kind words and you definitely don't seem to full of yourself.. Looking through your albums and I love your coffin! Woodworking was and is my Grandpa's passion, so I love to find a project where I can combine his interests and mine!

As to the Steam Punk lamp be forewarned nothing about that project was cheap!! I stumbled across a tutorial and as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to re create it!

That is the link for the tutorial, but as you noticed the bulbs make the project.. I had to get those shipped from the UK and I suggest ordering back up because the bulbs were cheap, but the shipping was not!! The copper was 1/2 internal diameter, the brass fittings were I believe 5/8, but dry fit everything at a Hardware store and you shouldn't have any problems! I brought one lightbulb with me to make sure it would fit into the tip of the brass fixture..

There is the link for said bulbs, and I did order from that exact site.. For being an international order it came relatively quick.. I didn't have any problems and I ordered I believe twelve bulbs just in case! I broke one on accident, so I'm glad I have extras! I plan on making a few more.

I ended up trying to emulate the curves and I wasn't thinking and I bought rigid copper and tried my best to heat and bend it.. I went as far as renting a pipe bender, filling the copper with sand and heating it up with a torch, but it was not bending without kinking! They make copper tubing which will give you a lot nicer curves. It should be in the same aisle as the rigid copper, but this stuff is a lot more pliable.

Good luck on the lamp.. I use mine every night! The bulbs are made for 220 volts, but they will work in the good old US at half amps.. So the 60w bulbs are fairly dim, but it does make one killer night light
  4. You're very welcome, and really, nice job. I've been making sawdust for 30 years, and I don't give away complements on woodworking very often. (hope I don't sound too full of myself)
I just looked through your albums and everything is very impressive. You're quite talented. I have one question. (for now) What kind of bulbs are in the steam punk lamp you made? It's AWESOME, and I've gotta build my own!
  5. Thanks for the comment, and yeah.. My Grandpa's shop is my favorite place to hang out!
