One idea I'd been tossing around was something like this motion sensor trigger -

Only instead of having it trigger a prop, run a line to my bedroom and set up some kind of alarm. Set a couple of them around and if someone's in the yard, I know it. Obviously the potential downside would be waking up all night to cats passing through...
