hello lauren...welcome to the halloweenforum...i am also from the carolinas, i live down here in lake wylie, just over the border of NC... Dave in the grave has been super helpful, and yes, you can definitely buy 2" thick foambaord at lowes... so many tutorials on how to do tombstones.. personally i create my design, (carve with solder iron into foam, name..date...etc).. I then use monster mud to coat the entire tombstone which help seals it and gives a gray look...Monster mud is 5 parts joint compound to 1 part black paint...mix and apply with brush... once sealed and dried, go over with paintbrush in black or dark gray the detailing again to bring them out...date, name, etc.. then finally i add some weathered stone gray spray paint which you can get at home depot or lowes, runs about $8 but you don't need much and should make around 10-12 tombstones.....good luck..
