It was during the 1st Gulf War, 3 days before Christmas It was
about 2:45 am. My friend Pat was driving me home from a
Christmas party, when all of a sudden he slammed on his
breaks and said "What was that?!" I said "What?" "The
Sky!" He exclaimed! "You didn't see that?" I said "No
what". He said "Shh!" and pointed. We were silently
looking up through his windshield when all of a sudden the
sky instantly became a bright neon blue. It was amazing!
Then, it went back to normal. We just stared and it went
neon blue and back to normal. It did this off and on for
about 4 or 5 more times. We didn't know what it was and
we were both very excited. We told our families and they
pretty much blew us off. We talked to many people. One
person said that perhaps it was the govt. putting
something in the atmosphere to help aid the spy satellites
spy on Iraq. Pat and I both thought that was very
unlikely, plus: IT WAS THE ENTIRE SKY! It was a bright,
even covering. It didn't look like it was coming from any
particular source. Then we were told by others that
perhaps it was ball lightning or Northern Lights. Well,
there was no thunder -- No sound at all, in addition,
there have never been reports of either of these phenomena
in the Philadelphia area. Then we looked at pictures in
the library and it didn't resemble ball lightning nor
Northern Lights at all! Well, over a year passed. I
pretty much lost touch with Pat, and I couldn't sleep one
night. So to help me fall asleep, I put on my headphones
and turned on WWDB FM, which was a radio talk station back
then, to help me fall asleep. It was near Halloween, and
the talk show host stated that he was going to devote the
night to people's true ghost or paranormal stories. He
then stated that he wanted to share a story of his own
before he opened-up the phone lines. He said that over a
year ago, right before Christmas, he was leaving the radio
station very early in the morning when he saw the sky
change to a "florescent blue" then back to normal and back
and forth. He described what Pat and I saw exactly!
Another thing to note is that the talk show host did not
see this in Philly, but in Bala Cynwyd, PA! He said that
it drove him crazy that there was nothing on TV about it
and no reports. He said after diligently searching area
papers and such, he did find a very tiny blurp in the
local newspaper about it. It basically said that 97
people witnessed the sky changing color back and forth and
they called the police and/or the media to find out what
it was. The blurp stated that the weather officials and
authorities and no record of it and did not know what it
was. To this day I couldn't tell you what it was. Was it
a dimensional shift in the sky? A vortex, some kind of
window to a different time? Whatever it was, I believe it
was something or some being (life-force) that was not of
this earth!

NObtis your not the only one. A couple of years ago my friend saw the EXACT sAVE thing. I rememberd him talking about it and we all called him crazy. I read this post a while ago and I remember my friend but never did anything. Today I just went over to give hima visit and ask him about it. First thing I said was what was it like he said "Neon blue lights" He also said it lasted about 5 minutes and would pop up now and then through out the night. He said the whole sky was filled with the light and you could see the clouds. We Live in New Jersey.
Wow, Misfit! It was seen all the way from Jersey?! I guess it's very possible since the entire sky lit up and it was seen in Philadelphia and Bala Cynwyd, PA. It was really strange, and I can't believe that not more was written about it or mentioned on the news. Very strange indeed! Thanks for telling me about your friend seeing it too...Now you can tell him that he's not crazy! LOL.

That is weird, but I have no doubt that you saw something like that. Round about 1996 or 1997, I was heading to my bosses home. He always had all of his college employees over for dinner on Saturday nights. It was late, 'bout 11 or 12 at night. This is in the mountains of North Georgia. We drive around the corner, and suddenly there's a bright red flash in the sky, and he literally stops the car and we're staring at it. It looks like a ball of fire in the sky...it's just sitting there, then goes to the right, then left, and then it just disappears. It wasn't small, but then again it wasn't big either. We looked at each other and wondered if the other person saw what I did. We both said we did.
The next day the newspaper reported on it saying that over a hundred people saw the same thing, and nobody had an answer. The best answer we heard was that it was a meteor that exploded entering the atmosphere, but that doesn't explain the moving right and left in the sky. Plus when one explodes in an area, there is usually some kind of sound, usually a sonic boom, and there wasn't one. It was silent.

Thanks for sharing that experience Mr. Nobody...I really enjoyed reading it! It really does sound similar to my story in the sense that there were never any logical answers. Hope you enjoy reading "Haunted Funeral Home" and "A Lingering Spirit" here in the Literature and Role-Playing section of the Halloween Forum too.
