King has a peculiar fame. He's considered a great horror writer, but his horror isn't ghosts and goblins. I think he and Poe have both been miscategorized. This story is a good example.
Cujo is about a rabid dog. Carrie is about school bullies and a child raised by a nutcase. Most of his "horror" is not supernatural, but regular stuff.
Still, what's more terrifying than being trapped or bitten by a rabid dog? What is more horrible than encountering the death in this story? The image of the shirtless man at the end really summarizes it. These are the nightmares that haunt us nightly for the rest of our lives, and King masters them.
I still think the editing in his earlier stuff made his work better.

Exactly one of the reasons why I like him. It's like Hitchcock, he made us afraid of taking showers alone, birds, neighbors, just every day stuff.

I liked King until I met him up in Maine. Talk about a real "Richard Cranium"! Never read another of his books.

I've had some of his newer works for a couple or few years now that I've still never read. But I tell ya what, his short story collection for Just After Sunset kicked total @$$. I really enjoyed them after a long time of being disappointed with each new release.

The Long Walk is still my very, very favorite.

My Mom got me hooked on them when I was young - her tradition was the first big blizzard of the year you started a new Stephen King. I love his early work but have been overall very disappointed in his later work. I think being hit by that car was a major turning point in his life. The stuff I have liked most in his later work are the short stories Just After Sunset being the best in my opinion and Full Dark, No Stars a close second. To me it seems like his full length novels unravel these days. I have not read much of his later work but I did enjoy The Dome....but again was not as tight as his early work, definately unraveled a bit.

while he may not be quite as good as when he was young, he still can write a good story , in my opinion, better than alot of writers out there,
I do like Dean Koontz too, basically I read so much I read most decent authors
