The Haunted Castle at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk has been completely reworked. Although I'll miss the cheesieness of the old "carney" ride, I have to give two thumbs way, way up to the new one. Most impressive is that the new ride was built beneath the old one, leaving only the facade and loading area above ground. A four-to-five person "Doom Buggy" Hearse carries guests through a loosely told story of a ghostly king and his Haunted Castle, with impressive Imagineer-like effects. If you ever find yourself along California's Central Coast, its definitely worth a look. Admission to the Boardwalk is free, and tickets for this attraction will set you back 5 bucks (less if you buy a ticket package). Since you're already there, you *must* ride The Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster. It's the fifth oldest coaster in the US @ 86yrs old, and it's big big fun.
