Nicole Kidman in The Others. I didn't care too much for her before, but this was a great performance.

I'll echo Nicole Kidman as an honorable mention. And while I can't say she is the GREATEST leading actress of all time, I think Jenny Agutter's performance in An American Werewolf in London was quite something. Maybe I should be writing in a thread called "Props to Good Actresses in Horror Films".
