I was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area, specifically Monroeville and Plum Boro. My sister used to do accounting at J.C. Penney's at the Monroeville Mall, and once I got my driver's license, I used to go out to the mall every night to pick her up and bring her home since she didn't like driving herself.
The whole time Romero was filming Dawn of the Dead, I would be out there in front of J.C. Penney's and walking around the mall watching them make the movie since my sister usually didn't get off until after midnight. I can't tell you how many times I sat there and watched Tom Savini and Jeannie Jefferies (who also played the blonde who tries to attack Roger when he's hotwiring the truck) putting make-up and appliances on people and taking them off and junking all kinds of stuff that I would give anything for today! Even worse, the casting folks asked me several times if I wanted to be a zombie, and I was like "ah... no 'cause I have to take my sister home when she gets off." What an idiot I was!
The ironic thing was the only thing I ever took home from the Mall that's associated with Dawn of the Dead was a shirt I wore one night when Steelers running back Franco Harris was there and doing a cameo as a zombie. I went over to meet him and he signed my shirt. That and a picture of me and Jeannie (she was hot!) was all I ever thought to get.

Hello Bruzilla.. This story is absolutely incredible....To just have the memory of this is priceless. I know how you must feel about not being in the movie and not getting any memorabillia. You really had no way of knowing it would become possible the greatest zombie movie of all time. Actually Dawn of the Dead is one on my absolute favorite movies...from any genre.
Also, looking back, getting to see Tom Savini and Romero work in person must be one of the best memories ever.

I go back to the Mall everytime I go back to Monroeville, and it's sad to see how it's slipping. Every year, my sons slide down the center escalator in J.C. Penney's (I ride it down), and then we go back to the elevator, which is right next to where my sister worked, and ride the elevator back up. It's quite a kick to do that if you really like the movie.
There used to be a sci-fi/animation toy store down at the end of the Mall where the big fountain was, and they built a really cool zombie museum in there, but when we went back this past April the store and museum had closed. I was in the museum two years ago and met a couple from New Jersey who had travelled all the way to Monroeville on their vacation just to tour the Mall.
They were asking me tons of questions, and i was glad I was there to show them around to all the places that were in the movie.
The Monroeville Mall was the big social gathering place for our area, and I spent countless hours there, so I watch Dawn of the Dead more to see the Mall as it was than for the entertainment value. I also took flying lessons out at the Monroeville Airport where they filmed the helicopter scenes. They weren't filming then, but I get a kick out of seeing the old snack and drink machines I used to use when I was in class in those scenes.
