If you do decide to look for it, "The man who laughs" was directed by Paul Leni and released in 1928. It was based on Victor (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) Hugo's novel "L' Homme Qui Rit". As well as inspiring the make-up for the Joker as Johnny has already mentioned, the film also indirectly inspired William Castle's 1961 film "Mr Sardonicus"
It's more of a tragic, romantic drama than a horror movie per se, but worth a watch if you can find it.

Wow! Thanks for the info......
Seriously, though.......I am really going to have to psych myself up. It is stupid movies that give me nightmares, not horror movies. Like "Whatever happened to baby jane" AAACKKKK!!! That movie creeps me out. And The Tom Petty video. "don't come around here no more". And I love Tom Petty. No, really, I LOVE Tom Petty. The only good clown is a dead clown.

Indeed, Baron! Mr. Sardonicus is also a rather unsettling film as well.
