I'm just about 200 pages into Dean Koontz's latest novel, 77 Shadow Street.
It's got some crazy monsters and cool ideas. I'm partial to Koontz anyway, but this particular novel, more than most of his stuff in the past 10 years, is really a horror novel. Monsters, hellish visions of future/alternate realities, living shadows, crazy stuff! I find myself wondering how i would put this or that into a haunt - which seems like a good thing to me.

From Koontz, you might want to check out 77 Shadow Street of course, since it is a horror novel, or The Bad Place, or Phantoms, or even Odd Thomas. Check out this list and pick one!
I have nothing against Stephen King, either. The best horror I read from King was "It". IMO, King's best stuff was the Dark Tower series, which was not horror at all.
Robert Mccammon is also a good writer, and does not get enough attention. I think Koontz has the best stuff of the three, but if you want pure horror, any of them can deliver.

Ive been curious about this. I really want to pick it up.
“Do you know the terror of he who falls asleep? To the very toes he is terrified, because the ground gives way under him, and the dream begins.”
