I'm a big fan of Zacherley and have done a few Illustrations of him for several magazines and books.

I grew up watching Count Gore, now I have a collection of about 100+ of various Hosts. Love them!
Thanks for the heads up.

I actually wanted to be one when I was a kid, but cable killed local programming and the profession of the Horror Host died right in front of my eyes in the 80s and the 90s.
I do what I can to combine performance with Halloween - Larry was good enough to take some of my vocal pieces and he plays them on Halloweenradio.com.
I figure if I can't be a horror host, I can at least be a Halloween master of ceremonies/comedian/philosopher and encourage the holiday that way.

We had the best in Pittsburgh with Bill "Chilly Billy" Cardille and Chiller Theater. It was so good it forced the local NBC affilliate to keep Saturday Night Live off the air for years, which drove the network nuts.

SE Pennsylvania around Philadelphia we had Dr. Shock in the 70s http://www.tvacres.com/horror_shock.htm . Then in the 80’s it was Stella the Maneater from Manayunk http://www.tvacres.com/horror_stella.htm . Which ended around 1987. Since then no more late night or weekend horror host or horror movies out of Philly.
Eat, drink and be scary.

I used to LOVE to watch Dr. Paul Bearer when I was growing up in the Tampa Bay area. He hosted "Creature Feature" and "Fright Theater". I've still got a couple of autographed pics of him.

In the SF Bay area, KOFY TV 20 airs each Sunday Night starting at 11pm PT, what they call "Creepy KOFY Movie Time". I've caught it a few times. Unfortunately they don't list the movie they are showing on my Tivo service which would be nice and if you miss the beginning of the movie sometimes it's hard to figure out what movie is playing. The host and crew are usually zombies or something else. Reminds me of when I was a kid back east and use to watch Saturday Night Live and a very late night horror movie show similar to KOFYs. Pretty sure I also caught Elvira too. Might be mistaken but I could swear I either watched or listened to Wolfman Jack. When I lived in the midWest there was another station that did a similar style programming on either Friday night or Saturday. Maybe that was Creature Feature.

Around here, Sammy Terry was the late night horror host. His show ran for nearly 40 years until he retired. He just recently handed over the reigns to his sign. They are currently talking about bringing it back!

There are other holidays besides Halloween? When did they start that?

I'm thinking digital TV might bring them back. Local stations no longer have to focus on filling one channel with content, but multiple ones, so there's a bigger demand for material. Our local channel 30 has now split into four channels, only one of which is a network (Fox) feed, and one mainly shows the Retro TV (RTV) network, which are shows from the 60's and 70's, but it also runs a hosted Saturday night horror film show. The props are pretty lame, and the movies are C-grade public domain stuff from the 50s and 60s most of the time, but it's a start.

If you want to pursue being a host, you should draw up a business plan and take it to your local stations. They might be looking to fill a couple hours of side channel airtime on Saturday nights.
