Over weekends in high school I used to work in a seafood restaurant and bar on Sodus bay. I washed dishes for next to nothing and didn’t have a car back then. I had to ride my bike nearly 8 miles. It was a really dark ride home since I didn’t get off work until midnight or sometimes 2am and it was all back country roads. I didn’t have a bike light at the time, usually duct-taped a flashlight to the handlebars. It wasn’t very good since the light kept swinging to the side with every bump. I usually had to keep one hand on the stupid thing to keep it pointing in front of me. One particularly cold Halloween night I was exhausted and just anxious to get home. I came to a really creepy woodsy area where it gets super dark since the trees block out any hint of moonlight. I tried to speed up a little, but that was scary also since you never knew when a surprise pothole would send you flying over the handlebars. Suddenly off to my left there was a huge banging that sent my heart pounding! I couldn’t see what it was and just started racing fast as I could. My flashlight was pretty useless, bouncing all over. The noise seemed to be following me. I didn’t dare look back until I reached a clearing. I ripped the flashlight off my handlebars and peered around anxiously. There at the edge of the woods was something that looked like a tall box. It was moving, kind of hopping.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

To my absolute horror it was a coffin! Was I dreaming? Was I losing my mind? I dropped the flashlight and took off in a panic. The banging kept following me and seemed to speed up with me. I finally got home and slammed and locked the door. It was still coming. I ran up the stairs and into the bathroom closing the door quickly as the coffin smashed through the front door. I could hear it coming up the stairs. BANG! BANG! BANG! It was beginning to smash the bathroom door now. There was nowhere for me to run. In panic I grabbed the first thing I could find to throw at it, Robitussin Cough syrup. It smashed and sprayed all over it.

Much to my surprise – the coffin stopped!
