I wanted to board up my windows this year, but was having a problem finding a way to secure anything to stucco siding. In Las Vegas, the stucco on most houses is inches thick;and around openings like windows and doors its even thicker, so nailing or screwing into it is almost impossible.
I had some old 2x4's laying around that happened to be close to the height and width of my windows, so I just decided to see if I could wedge them in there. Placing one end onto the stucco first and then wedging the other onto the window sil from either above or below horizontal, I just lightly pounded the board til it was tight, being careful not to pound too hard and damage the fragile stucco.
The vertical board is behind held in place by the pressure from the others.
While I was writing this, these fell out after enduring a wind storm all night, so I wont be putting them back up til the day before, and it ended up slightly damaging the stucco. Nothing paint cant fix though. Hope this is helpful

I also thought about just using cardboard and painting it because that would be easier to stick on, but I'm not that artistically skilled.

That's a good idea too, though ya have to be careful with what you use to "stick" stuff with. Last year, I used Gorilla tape to adhere black tarp to my porch........Ended up having to re-paint all the trim around my front door. Oh, and almost ripped off half my lip. Scary stuff those Gorilla products.
LOL

How about one of those large suction cups. I've seen them with threads in the back so you could run a screw through the wood into the suction cup. Use Vaseline on the suction cup and it should stay for quite awhile without letting loose. I would just use one at the top and use the window frame to hold the weight.

That's a good idea. Maybe just have suction cups down the whole length of the vertical board and the horizontal boards just screwed into that one. You would probably need quite a few, and find ones that are 3-4 inches wide. You could probably even screw the suction cups straight into the board with a washer attached, but that might break the seal doing that

No I think you only need one big one if you screwed or nailed all the boards together into one unit. That way all you have to do is keep it from tipping out away from the window. Here is a link of what I'm thinking. They use them for camera mounts and such. http://www.stickypod.com/osc/product...FQY65Qodfi1IhA
Some friends of mine used to work at a glass shop and they used ones like these with a handle to carry glass around.
