you could do some kind of motor that spins and pushes up against a board that is covered with a towel that has dirt on it

Haunted props.com has a version that they sell, but it's a hefty price tag. Here's a link to their video of the prop in action.

I recall a friend of mine making on years ago, but I can't remember how he pulled it off.

Anyone have any new thoughts on the subject?

You know what would make that even more creepy? A hand trying to push its way through or maybe just the fingers clawing at the surface.

very simple prop all you need is a slow torque lifting lid motor that raised s panel about the size of a grave you can even use 2. then just have it set into the ground or pile dirt on it such as Empty W said.

I would only advise that for the effort, you make it noticeable like the pro prop. Get some good movement going or most won't even notice the gound is moving. I always liked the idea though.

Looks like you could use a wiper motor. Attach a shaft about the width of the grave to it.
You would need to build a stand for the motor, and one to hold the end of the shaft level, and to give you some clearance.

Then mount some wooden ovals on the shaft that are oriented at different positions so they stand up at different intervals.

Finally cover it in burlap and make it ugly. The timer is the tricky part. You could do something overly complicated with a timing circuit, however it
might work just as well if you used the old florescent ballast flicker light trick on the motors power cord.

I may have to give this a try..

    Just my 2 cents,
I could be wrong but I think the flouresent light thing won't work cause the motor is DC and the Flicker thing is not. If you could dig deep enough to have a large wheel under it with random claws or breathing things. You could pop rivit it to a small bike wheel?
    I didn't fail. I found 10,000 ways it doesn't work.... T.E
