    Hi All,

In the process of building a wood and PVC graveyard fence (Thanks to Jaege for the awesome design! - see attached picture) and had a quick question. For those of you that have gone this route, how has your fence held up to the rain. I would like to use my fence for years to come and was wondering if I should take the time to water seal the wood.

    Thanks!

Greetings. If you used exterior grade paint or oil based spray on the wood it will be fairly sealed. My only concern would be the gaps around the PVC where it passes through the wood. you might want to take either clear silicone caulk to just seal it or latex caulk that you can paint to match, that would keep water from soaking that part of the wood that you cannot see. You just have to think like a raindrop. Keith

Last year, we had torrential rains throughout the month of October and my fence was out in it the whole time. This year, it looks good as new. We did not use any type of sealant on it other than paint. I actually never thought about it! Anyway, it seemed to hold up fine with a lot of wet days. I didn't even need to touch up the paint this year.

If you have some place to store it that will be out of the weather in the off season you should not have a problem. My fence is 4 years old (not old) but still looks great because in the off season it is stored so that it does not get wet and off the ground and I used exterior paint on the wood prior to the finished coat of black paint.

I'd say it would look better being aged and worn. Use a heat gun to make some bars crooked, ding and dent up the wood to wear it out, add some rust colored paint here and there... make it look ancient.

As for the design of this fence... I'M STEALING IT! Flat out admitting it, I'm stealing this idea. It looks so good!!!

I'm shameless, I know. I can't help it when something kicks ass, it kicks ass.

    Bryan316,

No worries on stealing the design. I actually took it from another member on this forum (Jaege) who was nice enough to send me some details on it. If you need any mesurements, let me know.

I've had my fence for 5 years and it looks like it did the first year. I usually have it out for 3 - 4 weeks before Halloween, and being in the Seattle area it has seen it's share of rain! I store it in the garage in the offseason. One thing I would be wary of when storing it is keeping it straight up and down. I know when I've stored other PVC sideways off the ground it warps in the heat. Enjoy your fence!

I was just going to use flat black spray paint, but sounds like exterior paint would be a better option. Off to Home Depot!!

I have used flat black spray paint. Wood is holding up fine, but I do have to do touch ups every so often. But 99 cents a can no biggie ! And its not the whole fence its just spots.
