I been slowly working on my entrance columns in between all the other props I'm working on. I'm finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Just finished one of the columns tonight and its ready to be painted. Tomorrow I will finish the second one.
Hopefully by this weekend these will be totally completed. Still need to figure out what to do with the tops.
The columns are made from 2x2 boards and 3/4" foam. I also made the bottom square and the section above it seperate pieces for ease of storage. Another thing I did was make the back sections removable by attaching them using magnets. This way in the off season I can also store props inside!
NICE!! The cracks on them look great! I am also slowly getting to the end of my column project. AND also figuring out what to do about the top. But I have a plan...just gotta make it happen this weekend.
Planning on making some columns... I have some gargoyles I'm gonna use with mine, you can probably get these cheaply at many places... may work for you getting something for this year that can be done in time.
I originally modeled these after the Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris. The original columns are topped with lanterns. I went around and just really couldn't find anything I liked or thought fit the style. Plus they are pretty pricey! I was thinking on topping them with either round ball treatment or like you suggested a pair of gargoyles. I have some that I have used in previous years. I actually was messing around with them earlier this year and drilled some holes in the mouth area and a feed hole in the back for a pipe. I hooked up a fog machine and they looked great spewing fog. So I think I could mount a fog machine inside of each column and let'em rip.
I'm loving the shape of these columns. They remind me of the roof tops of
1800s French? mansions. How about some iron work up top. I just put some plastic garden fence painted to look rusty on top of mine. They catch the light nicely from inside the columns. I'm building a riser for my rat gargoyles to be seen over the fence.
Ooh I like the light on top. Could you make one? Maybe find a plain glass ball lamp and add "metal work" around it? Maybe a fishbowl frosted? Actually a small ball coated in fiberglass would give a nice yellowish glow. I made a fiberglass pumpkin and lit from inside it looks cool plus it wouldn't shatter if knocked over or dropped... or just a small yellow or white ball if it's thick enough plastic. Cut a hole in the bottom for a light.
On mine I lay a grid over the top of the columns for the gargoyles to sit on. They look cool lit from below. You could use plexiglass to make the top weatherproof. The riser I'm making is just a hollow box with plexi on top to lift the Gargoyles above the fence and still let the light shine up.
