I've done this for several years, and have a different saying each year. I'm sure others have done it, but I've never seen anyone else post about it, so thought I'd share. It's just blacklight hairspray on a metal garage with a blacklight mounted in the eve. The blacklight has been mounted in the same spot for four years without ever taking it down. Never has weather issues with it. After Halloween, the hairspray just wipes off with soap and water. My garage is metal, and I don't think I'd do it to a wood garage. I'm not sure how well it would wash off and I would be afraid it may get discolored in the sun during over the summer. Here it is for this year:

WOW!! Great effect!! Any particular brand/strength (Super Hold, White rain? etc.?) hairspray and do you think it would work to illuminate rope? I made a huge house size spider web of brown rope two years ago. It looks great by day -= but at night - very hard to make out. ...

Ive tried to do a black spiderweb before Susie. While it did make it a lot more noticible than without it, it didn't pop anywhere near the way the writing does. I think I have a photo somewhere of it. I'll see if I can find it when I'm by my computer. The other problem I remember is that it took a lot of it (a couple cans) to have any real effect.

As far as brands, I just get whatever I find. I have noticed a small difference between brands, but not enough of one to make me spend the time to seek out a particular brand.

Edit: I just read your post again Susie. This isn't regular hairspray. Its blacklight hairspray found in the Halloween section with all the colored Halloween hairsprays for about $3 for a tiny bottle. It usually takes me one bottle to do the writing on the garage.

I saw the picture and before I read what you did I said how can that be simple. That is great. I hope you don't mind if I decide to use this technique being I still have a metal garage door. Its old so not to worried about it.

    Thanks for sharing

Hallow and thanks tekcor1! Looks like I need to get some of the correct hairspray. MysterE's White Rain for his spud gun is safe! LOL
