long time haunter, first year mech. prop builder.

i've taken on a few mech. props this year, but the one i'm looking forward to most is my fcg.
i've built my rig (which still needs to be painted black) with a 2x4 and a couple roller handles i used to paint my basement floor.
i'm using a 95 mazda wiper motor. the crank arm itself is part of an old bicycle banana seat rear support. i reemed the hole on one side and forced it over the splines of the motor shaft)

i'm using a cheap styro skull with red/blue color changing eyes.

the stand is just temp to hold up the rig while i work on it.

gave my ghost coat hanger hands.

so now i'm to the point where i need to apply my cheesecloth.
i've watched a lot of how to vids, looked at a tonne of pic's, and if theres one thing i've learned. theres a right and wrong way to apply the cheesecloth.
personally i feel the application will make or break the prop.

some of your ghosts are short an squat, others seem to use miles of cloth.
i've also noticed the tattered cloth look go's a long way.
this is where i need your help.
i was hoping you guys would post pic's of your ghosts and include tricks/tips you used on your cloth (cutting, tearing, stretching etc)

anything that will help sell the ghost effect.
perhaps we can even make this the official fcg thread of 2010.
i wanna thank you all in advance, i really would appreciate the help.
not to mention this is a great opportunity to show off your skills.

    thx guys and gals.

    Here you go:

Those are a few random FCG pictures from different years.

I used a good bit of tattered cheesecloth soaked in a TIDE detergent and water mixture. Then I tossed it in the dryer for a bit. I layered that with non-glowing cheesecloth for a different look.

i like your rig and ghost setup. Should look great!

    thx baboomgirl, found it!

i am still very interested in the treatment of the cloth.

eanderso13 have you used the ritt whitener before?
whats better to use, rit or tide? and how do the effects/color differ?

i really like the idea of using untreated fabric in the mix.

No problem...enjoy the pics! I used RIT and it worked well for me, but lots of folks have used Tide too and they prefer that, so I guess its just a preference? I think that the layering of the cloth and how you hang it is going to be key, more so than which brightener you choose. I wish my camera took good night shots so I could post a pic...but she will be hung soon and hopefully can get a friend to take a decent night shot to post...go figure...I believe I am the one who started the thread on that too, with no FCG to show! lol

Well today i learned a very valuable lesson. not all whiteners are created equal.

I couldn't find rit, but had a few options available.
The first i purchased was whitex wonder whitener. ($1.99)
Ended up costing me another $5 in gas to get something that actually glows under the blacklight.

The dylon super duty seems a little brighter than thier powered whitener.

Both the skull and rig recieved a coat of flat black krylon.

Started by wrapping the hands with 1/2" wide strips of cloth.

I used contact cement to adhere the cloth and a few well placed stitches to assure it stays put.

10 yards of cheese cloth, a lot of ripping and tearing and heres what i ended up with.
    Quite pleased i must say.

if i where to do it again, i'd probably go for 15 yards.

I think it looks great! I like the "airyness" of it. I almost think 15 yards would have been too much.

Bob, how did you get yours to glow white? I've only seen ghosts from KentuckyFX do that, although I know that the white dye is available (albeit very expensive).
